Power Steering Pump R&R V70-XC70 1998

Co worker has a 98 V 70 AWD and has a bad power Steering pump. Dealer wants $1200, FCB Groton wants $390 for a Scamtech pump, Erie wants $125 for a used pump, can't seem to find a rebuilt one around.

How difficult is the removal & replacement on this? I've done 240's and 740's but never a V70...

Hello, In short: 1)Use a turkey baster to remove P/S fluid. This reduces spillage as your car has the attached reservoir. 2)Slacken the serpentine belt and remove. 3)Loosen and clear the high pressure line from the pump body. 4)Using a socket extension through the access holes in the pully, remove the 3 mounting bolts.

There are a couple more bolts and a plate to remove to get it out but it is wide open and pretty much self explanatory if you take a look at it. The only other thing that you might run into is swapping out the pulley, you will need a special P/S pulley puller to get that done if your new/replacement pump does not come with one on it. I am not a big proponent of used parts but in light of the fact that I replace almost no P/S pumps in my shop I would be inclined towards stuffing in a used unit if you could get one at a deal. Is it not absolutely amazing just how much they want for a stinkin' P/S pump? As long as I have been working on these cars they have always wanted big, big bucks for a factory pump and if the truth be known, there is really not that much different between them and the stuff that they run on the domestics.

I know, the 240 OEM pump was a basic GM Saganaw pump and I recall being able to swap one with a late 70's GM pull from a junqueyard due to a punctured res. when the alt adjutment shim bolt decided to come free and go into the belt assembly and do a riccochet rabbit around the engine bay and ended up punching a nice hole in the pump. A wad of Juicy fruit gum was the roadside fix until I pulled one from a GM-funny the yard wanted $50 for the Volvo pump but only $10 for the Gm pump, same pump, different pulley.
