How to know AC working properly at winter time? V70-XC70

All,

Saw some really nice cars on the Craigslist. Besides other things, how to check whether AC is working properly without going to dealers?

Thanks,

How to know AC working properly at winter time? V70-XC70

I have read the other replies and have not seen this tactic suggested.

Heat the car up inside until it is toasty. Then turn on the A/C and place the ECC on "RECIRC", which should exclude the introduction of outside air. If the compressor clutch remains engaged and you feel cold air, it is probably being produced by the A/C.

Let us know what works.

At initial startup, part of the ECC ritual checking is to engage the compressor. Unfortunately, if it is below 50F, the AC compressor will not stay engaged.
I always assume the AC will NOT work because of an evaporator leak, unless the owner can verify that the compressor was replaced.
It all ways boils down to maintenance history and can you trust the seller.

For what it is worth: I live in the R.I./ CT. area and I am amazed at the number of Craigslist posting as to individuals being scamed on "good deal car postings." AFM

Well normally you could just see if the darn thing blows cold but seeing as how it is butt cold outside to start with that will not work. I would have to say that your next best indicator will be compressor engagement. Make sure that with the A/C on high fan speed and blowing full cold that the compressor engages and stays engages. If it does not engage then you need go no further, if it engages and then cycles on and off it is more than likely working ok but has a leak that is evident by the lower than normal level of refrigerant in the system that is allowing the compressor to cycle. Aside from that I cannot think of anything off the top of my head that you can do short off taking it to a shop and having them evaluate it.
