I recently bought an 850 and the previous owner only had one key. Since my wife also drives the car, we need at least one other key. I would prefer to have two extras. There are no places in this town to get a key cut for an 850 volvo. We live in central Virginia (zipcode 24450). The closest Volvo dealership is over an hour from here. What is the most economical way to get another key made? I looked on line and one place says that with the VIN and proof of ownership that they will make one for $40. Seems a bit steep for a key since it's not electronic.

Please advise.

    call around to ther independant locksmiths in your town/city. i found a shop in roanoke that cuts the volvo key for $20 each.

      Wouldn't he need the original spare for the locksmith to cut the correct duplicate? The one in use will be worn a bit.

        I had my keys cut from my old, worn and working key. All the duplicates work just like they should. The original would be better but most folks dont save the original keys and have gazillions of duplicate keys cut every day from worn, old keys and they all work like they should. if the key doesn't work the locksmith tries again or gives you your money back. My local dealer wanted $48 for each key, the locksmith only wanted $20, it was a very simple decision for me.

    Our local dealer will grind them out for around $10-15. The VIN is required, as the cutting machine is programmed with the factory specs.
    Call your "local" dealer and ask if they will cut you a key or 2 and mail them to you.

    The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are a 95 854T and a 98 V70R :)
