850 turbo drivetrain compatibility... '94/'96 850

Hi Folks..
New guy to the FWD section. Question is:

For some time (a year or more), I've been sitting on a '94 850 turbo wagon, automatic. Has a bad transmission, but is otherwise in good order.

I've possibly recently come upon a cheap '96 850 turbo wagon with an allegedly bad engine...but otherwise in good order.

Are major parts twixt these two years compatible? Would it be easier to swap good for bad engines, or easier to swap good for bad trannys? Or would it be easier to act like this '96 never came up and walk away from both?

Thanks,
Matt

Both cars are interchangable. Of course, the tranny on the 1997/98 is much better :)

Your decision to swap the engine or the tranny. Probably less trouble to swap the tranny and replace the RMS just for the heck of it.

    The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are a 95 854T and a 98 V70R :)

Rear Main Seal between the engine and tranny. A very cheap part to keep the oil in the crankcase, but only accessible with the tranny removed.

either way will work fine i think, easier thoug to swap trannys.
All depends if the 96 wagon is nicer than the 94, if so maybe the work with swapping engine will be worth it.

Thanks.. ok. I know the '94 is good, as I've got it. THe other is a bit of a sight unseen thing, but... if the bits will bolt up, perhaps can make 1 good car, and have a heck of a lot of spare parts...
