120k timing belt replacement.... V70-XC70

Hello everyone.
I am about to tackle the timing belt on my 98 v70 but am curious what the thinking is regarding other ancilliaries at the same time.

I have been told that it is best to replace the water pump (leaking or not), tensioner, idler pulley, crank and cam seals while I am in there.

What did you guys do?

Any indy shop quoted this for $950 including each of the items above but since I can get the parts for about $375, I guess I will bite the bullet and spend a few late nights doing it myself

    The T belt is supposed to be changed every 70K miles, if you want to wait until it gets warm outside. Knuckles don't hurt as much when it is around 70 outside.

    Water pump should be checked, not neccessarily replaced. The antifreeze should be flushed every 2-3 years. But go ahead and replace the tensioner, eto.
    Cam seals? why? Are they leaking? So long as you keep the PCV system clean, there should be no problem there.
    I would look at the S belt rollers for play and smoothness.

      Thanks, Klaus. I am replacing at 120k as the belt was last replaced at 60k. Better early than sorry, lol.

      thanks for the response. Seals are not leaking that I know of; just wanted to see if that was standard practice as the indy shop was recommending. The kit I purchased from FCP does include them so I may replace or may just pack them away for a rainy (er, oily)day; the PCV system is in good shape after replacing the RMS a year or so ago.

      I will replace the water pump as I dont trust the bearing for another 70k miles.

        Replacing the water pump is not a bad idea but I personally would not do it if it was not leaking. I see these pumps routinely go 200K and further. I would replace all of the pullies and tensioners. The cam seals I would not bother with unless they were leaking and if you do them do not stuff in anything other than factory Volvo seals. In the past 10 years of running my own shop I have used aftermarket seals (Elrings) 3 times and 3 out of 3 have leaked within 6 months. I tried them when I first opened the doors 10 years ago, again about a year ago to see if it was just a fluke, and once more on my own car about the same time as the second set I installed. I got to change out the customer pay set and have yet to address mine and they are leaking pretty bad. You might want to take a look at the engine mount that is mounted right down by the crank pulley, you will be in that area and they do go bad from time to time. They are another one of those "you get what you pay for" kind of things. You can buy a cheap crappy one and it will last a while but usually not that long or you can spend your money on the correct factory part and enjoy it much longer. If you do need that mount and you can find one made by Corteco or Boge then you can pretty much buy them with confidence as they are the typical manufacturer of those components for Volvo.
