Replacing cracked side view mirror? 850 1996

Ok, this is kind of embarrassing. A couple weeks ago, I managed to hit our garbage can as I was backing out of the driveway. The mirror was completely folded back, and when I put it in its normal position, I realized that the glass part was severely angled. I tried to move it using the electric motor, but it didn't work. I figured that 1) It was stuck, or 2) I'd managed to damage the motor.

So, I jumped out of the car and tried moving it by hand. You can imagine my surprise when the cheap thing bent, and the glass essentially became one big spider crack.

That's the broken piece. I just have a couple of questions.

1. How do I get the mirror off without breaking anything (I don't want to have to buy a new motor as well)?
2. Speaking of which, what are the chances that I damaged the motor? I didn't hit the garbage can hard, just going 1-2 mph.

Slide a screwdriver behind the glass and it will "pop" off of the center post it is attached to. Be careful not to pull on the wires for the heated part.

    I won't bid on the $10 mirror :)

Ok, I just found some time to mess with this, but it was almost dark.

I managed to get the mirror off, but when I tried using the electric motor, I saw nothing (although I heard it). It was too dark for me to really see anything, but do you think the motor's screwed up, and if there's any way to fix it? I'm probably going to mess around with it tomorrow and buy the mirror soon, but it's still nice to know what to expect.

The motor moves the post the mirror attaches to. You will be better able to see it in daylight.

Okay, I got a chance to look at it again yesterday. It seems that when I bumped the garbage can, the rack of the R&P setup slid, causing the mirror to have a limited range of movement. The teeth don't seem to be damaged, but I can't get it back to where it should be. I just tried forcing it, is there some other way?

Sorry, no help from me 850 1996

I haven't had the need to do that on my car yet :)
