ATF - does brand matter? V70-XC70

Hi Brickies,

A question for you...

Does the Automatic Transmission Fluid Brand matter, that is to say, must it be Volvo's own or will any good ATF do?

I did a flush on my recent V70 acquisition as the old stuff was BURNT - hgg'hmm not good - smelllllls baaaaadddd.

Any way, all done, and tranny fairly smooth, just a bit slow to move up gear when cold and sometime a slight jolt - seems hesitiant.

So I'm thinking, should I have used Volvo's own and am I doing any harm?

Any questions, please ask; any views please say!

Cheers

Andy

What year was that car? My 1988 needs Dexron/Mercron what ever, the early 5 speeds need synthetic, and the newer ones need Mobile 3309.

Your owner manual will describe for both, AT and PS fluid. Brand name does not matter.

Recheck your PS fluid in a few weeks to see how dirty it is, may need to replace one more time just to get all of the dirt out.
