Occassional crank but no start and -- indication when in park V70-XC70 2001

I have several older Volvo sedans and am not up on the XC70. A friend's son has an occassional engine crank but no start with 2001 XC70. He says it runs fine once started (although did say stalled once after starting).

I'm thinking crank sensor (rpm sensor) or fuel pump relay, which I ordered for him since figure good preventive maintenance. An odd thing he tells me is that when the park P indicator shows dashes when it does not start. Now if it were a shifter park position switch I would think the engine would not turn over.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks,

Gary

Just an added thought or two. If the rpm sensor is bad, it will throw a code and most likely a CEL. Also, the rpm gauge will not show any rpm's while cranking.
The fuel pressure regulator being inop can be checked when you turn the key to pos II. You should hear the fuel pump humm if it is working. Also, check for fuel pressure at the end of the injector rail. Cover it with a cloth in case there is fuel pressure :)

      Thanks Klaus,

I told him the other day about looking a rpm to see if moving while cranking, but forgot to ask him if he checked. I have not seen the vehicle, but will on Tuesday and I'll check the FPR and fuel pressure.

I wish I were up on the electronics with the new P2 cars, they are such a pain. You are correct about the older cars not even engaging the starter if not in P or N. That was a mechanical thing behind the key switch.
The new models have that electronically, I believe. If the new cars still have a PNP switch, have him "row" the shifter a dozen times and see if the selector shows P.
