Clicking door, clarification please! 850

First it was clicking sway bar end links, then clicking spring seats, now it's the clicking door syndrome. Don't even start me on the squeeky rattly dash!

I've read the archives, yet a picture would be helpful. WHAT in or near the door needs welding? Nothing that I can see with the door on the car. Mine seems to be somewhere inside the door, not the post like some of the older posts seem to indicate (LF door).

So what's the plan? Remove the door and door panel, unbolt teh strap, and weld the stap or the door? Or have I broken something different that everyone else ( woldn't surprise me)

Next on the list, fixing the PCV system, replacing rotted vacuum lines, heater core, and probably one day the AC evaporator and adjusting the AC clutch. Why do I like this car?

I think you like the car for the same reasons I enjoyed my 855. I bought mine new in 1997. It was my favorite car of all time for performance, space(wagon), comfort and safety. Your description of issues (I never had any rattles) reminds me of why I sold mine after 11 years.

Sounds like loose door checkstrap mounting bolts which happened with my 1996 850. Just try tightening them up & see if that works, otherwise if they keep coming loose try a little loctite. Depending on the amount the door gets used it may be a failed checkstrap or cracked mounting point on the body.
My 1994 850T has a rattle in the drivers door that I need to investigate but I believe is fairly common.

ANSWER Clicking door, clarification please! 850

Is it the door check stop strap that is broken? Does the door no longer have a partial opening where the door stops, and does the door want to close by itself when parked slightly up hill?

Depending on the year, your door panel has different attachments. Be careful in the cold weather. Oh, there is a small plastic phillips screw at the bottom front of the door, make sure you have it off before you start popping the panel off.

There is a NEW and novel way to adjust the AC clutch. Takes 30 minutes and 3 small pieces of plastic that you use to keep bread wrapped up. It's pinned on Volvospeed.com

It did turn out to be the door stop itself, bots are tight, can't find anything cracked or broken. The picture on Bay 13 really helped me visualize how it's put together and what's wrong.

Ordered a new one from FCP Groton, $37 with shipping.

Thanks Klaus and others!

When you get the part, take it to a harware store and get 2 stainless steel nuts and lock washers for it. Those do not come in the package and you car does not have them, it is a re-design.

I tested my door. The "partial opening", aka "detent", works as designed.

I am beginning to think that I may just need a lubrication. Sked mainteneance check is coming soon. I will see if it still "clicks" after they shoot the grease to it.

It no longer has any of the partial stops, which on a winday day or is a sloping parking place can make an adjoining car owner unhappy if the door gets away from you :-(

Thanks for the link, I'll play with it this afternoon

I will co-sponsor this query. My 1998 V70 T5 just began to exhibit this same phenomenon. When I open the driver side door, I hear audible clicks which seem to occur at specified intervals, e.g., at 20, 40, and 60 degrees. Similarly, when I close the door, I hear the same clicks at the same angles. I can see nothing amiss in the door hinge.

Is it a rattle inside the door when you shut it....mine did that.

My blower fan chirped when I took a left turn. Rattly tailgate, AC gremlins. I did the vaccum lines, turbo oil seal, strut spring seats, timing belt. Never did get around to replacing the PNP switch(still have it in my tool chest, along with some volvo vaccum elbows...let me know if you need them). The 850 was a good car for us, all in all. But I had the Amazon as a backup....

Let me know more about the "click"

Cheers

Volvo's slogan should be (with appolgies to VW)
"It's not a car, it's a hobby!"
