Going to look at a 96 850 T5R,. What to look for? 850 1996

The heading pretty much says it all,
I presently have a 740T that is getting pretty beat up, Not having been
able to find a 940T I'm going to look at a 96 850 sthat the dealer says is a
T5-R

I'd appreciate any tips on things to look for on a FWD car that has about 100,000 miles on it.

I do not know what the status of the timing belt is! (Cost to have replaced ?)

Best regards

Woody

Just an FYI as you go if you haven't already and in case you find an 850 at a "local dealer".

The T5R was only made in 1995 for all that it came with inside and out and color scheme etc. In 1996 it would have been either a T5 or an R.

Going to look at a 96 850 T5R,. What to look for? 850 1995

Yeah I'm going to look at a '95 850 Turbo. I keep hearing lots of nightmare stuff about bad electrical as well as transmissions. Any words to the wise.
This car has about 122K on it.

Thanks

I really like my 95 854T. Except that the AC needs a new evaporator ($1200) and the tranny isn't as good as my 1998s. Fun, fast, and reasonably safe.

The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are a 95 854T and a 98 V70R :)

Going to look at a 96 850 T5R,. What to look for? Update! for grins! 850 1996

Thought you all might enjoy a laugh over my trip to see a car.

I drove to a dealership about 90 miles away. Small used car lot!

First thing I see is the 850 with the hood open and a battery charger hooked up.
Second thing I notice is tires that look to have 2" of sidewall and small wheels to match. Third thing is that there is a lot of after market gegaws on the engine and induction system.

Start having doubts!

dealer tries to start the car, no luck! Gets 5 gal of gas pours it in and lo and behold, it starts. This is good news, bad news time (I'm wondering how much crud from the bottom of the tank has now headed for the injectors.

But What the heck, it surges in a rolling idle. Dealer trots out OBD II reader, reader sayys one of the O2 sensors is bad?

I decide to drive it just for grins, hoping the fiberglass front spoiler that is already broken doesn't fall the rest of the way off.

As I pull oput of the lot and tap the gas pedal a large clunk comes from the fron of the gar, (bad engine mount maybe?) When I get to 55 MPH road I punch it!

Wow does this thing rev up fas or what! Makes my loyal 740 T seem sluggish, but the front end os swaying around and the car can't decide whether to cross the yellow line or veer to the ditch!

Then the final straw, all of a sudden it sounds like the fan was just shoved into the radiator. OK that's about all the grins I need for today.

I do a 180 shortly after and in less that 10 minutes total I'm back to the dealership. I had already told the sales guy that I am a mechanic and not only own a 740T but also had worked on Volvo Penta engines and drives for 30 years

So I suggested to him that the Clunk and the Possible fan noise might need a look see before any one else drove it. I also suggested to him that his best possible customer might be a DIY type who wanted a flashy car. (with a lot of work)

So how did it work out. I was glad to drive the car regardless. It pretty well told me that the T5 or R engine was probably more that I need in an 850 or S 70, especially when I compare it to my 740T

So I'm still looking

By the way it's amazing how many 1999 S70s are for sale in NC some with very low mileage (44,000) Do we know how to say disenchanted owners!

Regards

Woody

>>I do not know what the status of the timing belt is! (Cost to have replaced ?)<<

Look for a sticker either on the computer box or the timing cover that says Byte Exchange and has the mileage listed on it. The change interval is every 70,000 miles but it is customary to change the water pump, the tensioner, and the rollers with every other timing belt change. I just did the 140 k change on my son's car and the parts cost was right at $288.00 If you get it done tack on another $300 or $400 in labor.

Just spent 2 days on the road armed with a list of 6 cars to look at 5 S70's 98 or older and 1 850.

First S 70 had 95K on it and the dealer could not tell me when the timing belt had been changed. Was kind hi priced too crossed off 2 others that were also up in price. (realized that with the economy like it is that I just did not want to spend 9K on a car right now.

The three lesser priced cars 2 S70s and an 850 had been sold.
On my way home to the NC Coast from Raleigh, I stopped at a little country town at a small lot who always seemed to have some older Volvos. He had a front wheel car (Either an 850 or S70, I've looked at so many that they all run together!) turbo that was built in April 1999 the battery was dead so I could not get the mileage. I know that the 99's are supposed to have the dreaded ETC.

So here is the question. If it has the Electronic Throttle control, where will it be and what will it look like? a picture would be great! He's going to charge the battery the first of the week and I'll get the mileage then. If it's too high then I go no further. If it has an ETC, no deal. I did not ask what he was asking for it so there is still that price thing too!

At the moment My faithful 740T Has almost 200,000 miles on it, but it's still chugging along.

Any how I'd appreciate any info

As always thanks

Woody
