2001 V70 - Erratic behavior? V70-XC70

I feel a problem with my recently bought 2001 V70, 2.4T, 5 speed automatic. This forum is the only place I can try to explain it, since nobody else will believe me.

The car has only 41 K miles, the engine seems to be in good shape, delivers plenty of power, runs quietly and smoothly. The ETM module is probably not original, since it has a yellow label on it. I bought is used with 39K miles, and do not know its service history.

In short - the car does not drive smoothly. These are the symptoms:

1. When I start moving (take my foot off the brake pedal and move it to the gas pedal), the car makes 2-3 slight "jerks", instead of just start rolling smoothly.
It is also not very "linear" at very low speeds, i.e. does not respond to the gas pedal predictably - can hesiate a bit, then jump. This makes parking or slow traffic driving uncomfortable.

2. At cruising speeds, when I drive at 60-70 mph, on 5th speed, at about 2000 rpm, the car "jerks" occasionally. I feel that it hesitates (loses power very briefly), then jumps (catches up). This feels almost like bad gas, bad ignition, clogged injector, or a transmission lock-up (that small bump when torque converter locks up). During these jerks the speed does not change and tachometer does not show any visible rpm changes. This is not severe, and really does not affect driving, but it is very annoying. A passenger can't even feel this, but as a driver, I do.
I noticed this happens more often when the engine delivers low power/torque, like driving downhill, and almost never happens during "power" driving - hard acceleration, high speeds, uphill, etc.

3. Sometimes when I shift to R, it feels like a hard shift, most of the time shifting to reverse is smooth.

I like the car overall, but this drives me crazy. I never had a turbo, ETM, or 5-speed auto, maybe this is even normal, but I would love to hear from someone.

Thank you,
Yuri

Boy I miss my 850..

Yuri,
Welcome to the electronic throttle age. My wife's 2001 Audi does the same thing at low rpm. I hate it, she got used to it and feels nothing wrong.

I would ask a dealer to look at the ETM and find out if a software download is scheduled for either the ETM or the tranny.

Andrew is correct about engaging reverse, it take a long time.

1. If this is persistent (happens all the time, not just once in a while) than I'd blame either ETM behaving or transmission slippage in the first gear, as crazy as it sounds. Never experienced either though.

2. Wierd, never experienced this. On the other note, I never "felt" the lock-up moment in 01'T5. It's either not happening in my car ;-) or it's completely smooth. What else can it be ? Cruise control may downshift for the hill but you'll always see it on tachometer...

3. It takes about a second to engage a reverse in my car... if you push gas before it catches then it will be a hard shift otherwise there's just no torque to create "bang".

Overall - I'd say that if it drives you mad then you should visit a dealer/indy mechanic for purely diagnostic purposes.

The car always starts moving with 2-3 "jumps", but they are barely noticeable, so nobody will consider this a failure.
Al my complaints may sound silly to others, since ultimately the car is moving, I get where I need to, can go as fast or as slow as I want.

Maybe my problem is that I came from a 850, which was a much simple car, and never exhibited anything unpredictable.

I'll drive and see. If this jumpy driving is a sign of a problem, this problem will pop up some day.
