97 850 T5,with 167K,mostly driven short distances.well maintained except i
noticed a kind of milky foam at dip stick and smoke coming up throught it
causing oil to spill from it too.the car have never overheated, and the antifreeze level never changed.does any one knows where this excessive moist
come from.i also noticed that the exhaust smell is stonger than normal.(not gas smell).are the 850's have this issue?thanks

To add to the other advice:
You mentioned oil spilling from the dipstick tube. Check the little o-ring on the dipstick. After 11 years, it's probably roughly square as a result of wear. A new o-ring won't cost nearly anything, just make sure you get one of oil-resistant rubber.

Interesting.
My 1994 855 started doing the exact same thing at
164,000 miles. Removed intake manifold and
completely replaced PCV system, problem went
away. The breather box was completely full of crud.

Good luck with the weather.

You cannot "check" the PCV system easily, but it is more than likely clogged. It needs replacing. About 3 hours for a decent mechanic, or 5 hours for DIY.

If you don't replace the breather box and lines, you will start to get leaky seals which will cost so much more.

Your car still has an oil breather box below the intake manifold. But first, make sure the vacuum tree is clear of sludge and the line that goes to the PCV valve needs to be inspected. If your PCV valve still has the plastic screen in it, throw the screen away!

Hi Klaus,

A long time has passed since i should have replaced the PCV system. What's been kept me from doing it, is the need for the removal of the inlet mainfold. Oil comsumption is high (2L/3000Km), and smoke is coming from the dipstick, but i can live with it.
Is there any other way to change the system? Maybe from underneath?

Best regards
Rui Amaro

The breather box can only be removed with the intake manifold taken out first. There is no way to reach anything from the bottom of the car.
You may be able to "live" with positive crankcase pressure, buy your car will not. The camshaft seals or rear main seals will leak to releive continued pressure. Your valve guides are also suffering.

If you don't have the knowhow, find a good Volvo mechanic to do it.

"mostly driven short distances"

When a car is only driven short distances, it doesn't allow the engine to get to full operating temperature. The result is that water vapor condenses and collects in the oil, thus the milky/foamy funness that you have. It happens mostly in winter. Change the oil and take the car for longer drives more often!

I should add.... 850

I should add that if there is smoke coming out of your dipstick tube that usually means there is positive crankcase pressure, usually due to a clogged flame trap/PCV system.
