Timing belt - How to determine if it was changed (new owner) 119K S70 1998

Car purchased from a used car lot (Volvos only). At time of purchase it had 82K. I am just becoming aware of timing belt reqmt and dont know if it was ever changed. Is there a way to determine if needed prior to bringing to shop? Is there any symptoms? Based on forums the anzwer appears to be NO. Forgot to mention milage is now 119K+

ANSWER Timing belt - How to determine if it was changed (new owner) 119K S70 1998

If it was changed on time it was done at 70K, somehow I doubt that it has made it 50K past it's intended replacement interval without grenading. But, I have yet to find anything definitive to indicate whether a belt was changed when it was supposed have been or not. My advise to all of my customers in your shoes is that unless you have a receipt that shows you where and when or a belt change sticker under the hood with a date and mileage on it the you should really just bite the bullet and change it out. It is really cheap insurance. You are due for a belt replacement in another 20K, just change it out early and move on with confidence.

Thanks for the reply. You just re-enforced my thoughts! I will look for belt replacement sticker. I have original maintenance record book, but entries stopped after 65K. Appreciate your help.

If your booklet has the servicing dealer in it, call them up and ask if the belt was changed. Never hurts.
BTW, the second belt will need a new tensioner also.
