      ABS module, FIXED! S80 1999

Ok, here is what I did. And yes, maybe I removed it and jumped the gun asking for help, but oh well, it all worked out. When you get the module out of the car the hard part if truly in front of you. The most difficult part of this whole task was removing the circuit board from the rest of the module. The top of this thing just doesnt' want to come off. I'm certain Victor knows a simple way, but here if what I did. I took the old dremel tool and cut the locking rings from the screw holes. Then I pried off the top of the module. Bear in mind, this is no easy task for a first timer and it looked pretty bad at first. However, once I remove it, there in front of me was the itty bitty problem causing all the issues. The post on the circuit board that is one of the power posts definately had a bad solder or it was just worn away. Nevertheless, I soldered that post back to the circuit board and upon inspection did not see any other breaks in any other spots. I put everything back together along with some silicone and put it back in the car. I fired up the car and most of the items on my dash were gone! The only two things left were the ABS and check engine lights. I pulled the car out of the garage and before I could get too far up my street the ABS light went out and the only thing left is the check engine light! Got up this morning, turned the car on and voila! The only light on is the check engine light. NO ABS, no nothing! If anyone knows the proper procedure for turning off the check engine light, please let me know! Good luck!

Stop by an autoparts store and "borrow" a scanner to clear out your codes. I believe autozone and pepboys will send an employee to your car. Write down the codes first, then delete them.

Please do share your repair procedure.

I often hear people on this board talk (complain) about their ABS modules. How often do they fail or at about what mileage interval? My 1999 V70 is at 64,000 miles, and so far, no brake problems at all. Also, what do the majority of Volvo drivers who are not car enthusiasts do when their ABS units fail?

They send them to Victor Rocha .... S80 1999

There's a lot of posts on the AWD forums extolling the virtues of Victor Rocha (at least, that how I remember his name's spelling). He's cheap (uh, inexpensive) but his work is of extraordinary quality (so I've read), and turnaround is fast, although you may have to call ahead so he'll expect your package, and he'll even loan you a (hard to find sized) torx to remove it.

I'm doing this from memory -- I might have some details mixed up. But you can find the details in the archives.

      Good luck.

Yes, Victor Rocha. He recently did my ABS module (about 4 months ago) and I've had no problems since. I believe it was $140 total (for my module and situation), turnaround time was about 8 days (coast to coast) and you can drive the car just fine without the module in it (lit up like mardi gras of course). When he's done you're good to go, you do not need to take the car to the dealer afterward to have them hook it up to VADIS/VIDA.
Do a search on his name here and I'm sure you'll come up with his website with easy and thorough instructions on how to proceed. New modules at the dealer are over $500 plus the labor to put them in (which is simple). 90% of them do not need to be replaced, just repaired and upgraded.

If you try to do it yourself and then send it to him to fix what you messed up, it'll probably cost you extra.
