NUTS 850

I've four locking wheel nuts but the adapter is missing: anyone know how to remove the nuts?

I had to remove bolts that were over tightened by a shop. When I tried to change to winter wheels I damaged the key.

I got a new key for $12 through my dealer. The process involved emailing a good close-up of the bolt to the manufacturer.

The new key fit fine.

I also put PB Blaster on the bolts, tapped them with a hammer, and over tightened the other 4 lugs by 20 foot-pounds.

Your only good hope is to keep looking for the adapter. It is difficult to get a good grip on that nicely round polished surface, especially when it is recessed in the lug nut hole.

Hi Klaus!

Thanks for your reply... When I bought the car I noticed these were not Volvo nuts, so it may be hard to find the adaptor...

Anyway, just to say that like you my old girl has a new home - the 240 GLT has gone to a Volvo Collector who exhibits at car shows! He was amazed by its condition. I was really sad to see it go.

Also the 850 T5 GLT has a new owner, a trained mechanic who said the 12 year old car drove like a new 3 year old. He was over the moon by his purchase.

Meanwhile I'm left with a rather cruddy V70 (I could not afford to keep 4 cars).

What the crooks do is to hammer on a sacrifice socket which is slightly bigger than the security nut which will give enough purchase to get it off. Alternatively, weld a bar onto the nut and lever it off that way.

Air chisel. Most locks that are worth a darn are not only polished but hardened. I have a set of stripped nut and bolt removers that have teeth on them that bite right into the fastener and twist it right off, they work absolutely bitchen. So I purchased a size large one for just this application and it tore the teeth right out of that socket, it was not pretty. So I have just gone back to the age old method of using an air chisel to drive them off. While it typically screws up the old lock, it does take them babies right off. If you do not have access to an air chisel and the pre-requisite air compressor to run it you can either see if the local shop will loosen them for you or use a hammer and chisel and really do it the old school way.

Just be downright careful with the chisle and hammer. Those aluminum wheels are really soft!
I just did that on one of the torx screws on my Jeep's dropdown windshield after rounding off the screw. I used a punch/drift to make a small dent near the outer edge, then a cold chisel to turn the screw. Very carefully!!!

If you have a ruined wheel that you can't remove, take a hole saw bigger than the lug nut and cut through the wheel to the hub. Remove the wheel, then melt off the aluminum with a torch. The lug or nut will come off easily.
