Head Gasket? S70

Hello,
I've got a 1998 S70 GLT. It has about 185K on it. Recently gas milage has been going down, but I figured it was the winter mix of gasoline. The other day the coolant light starts going off when I go around corners. Coolant is a little low, but very clean. While I'm under the hood I check the oil, and it's a milkshake. I'm thinking head gasket, but there isn't any oil in the coolant at all, just coolant in the oil? Anything to check out? How much am I looking at to get it fixed? Thanks!

    Hi,

I had the same problem on my 98 S70 T5, except it was the other way around. Oil in the coolant, but no coolant in the oil. Mechanic did a pressure test and said it was the head gasket. Also that I was going to need a new turbo soon. So after many $$$ I got my car back and had the same problem. Turns out it was the oil cooler in the radiator developed a crack that only allowed a oneway flow as compared to a more typical two way. Flows one way when engine is running and hot, then the other way after engine is turned off (this is when the coolant has more pressure and can flow into the oil).

Your milkshake may be because of condensation in the oil. It is hard to heat up the oil in these engines in the winter, they seldom get above 180 degrees unless you drive it hard.
I suggest you change the oil and look around for a mechanic that can check the oil for antifreeze. At 3,000 rpm, the oil pressure should be greater than the coolant pressure, making a real mess of the fluid.
If your mileage is less than 20 in stop and go traffic, check for vacuum line leaks. Especially the elbows at the intake manifold and under the battery tray.

Thanks for the reply. When I get off work I'll change the oil and top everything off and then give it a good run. I'd love a "free" fix.

After your run, take a close look at the radiator plumbing for any green spots. And this weekend, drop your right front wheel and take a look at the waterpump location for the same. I almost forgot, check the cap for the overflow bottle for hairline cracks, they tend to last only 10 years or so.

          Hello,

Do not the turbo models enjoy a oil cooler on the back of the oil pan?

I have heard of these failing. You really should check this before removing the head.

          Good Luck!!!

Depends upon the year model, the later ones run it at the back of the pan and the earlier cars have it incorporated into the radiator, just like the trans cooler only on the other side of the rad.
