P0305 V70-XC70 2001

Hey All,

2001 V70-T5M, just had the timing belt done two days ago by an indy shop I trust. I put 100 miles on the car and now cylinder 5 is misfiring. My internet at home is screwy so I have to run into the office once in a while to look things up.

I am getting spark from the coil, but I haven't tried to switch coils between two plugs to see if it moves to the other cylinder, I'll do that in a few when I get home again. I did replace the plug with a cheapo one to see if that was the problem, but the one I pulled out looked pretty good (OEM volvo plug) and the problem has not gone away with the new plug. The only code is the 305 for the cylinder misfire. It seems to be sparking at least a little in the chamber, cause when the coils comes off there's a noticeable drop in rpm. Rough running through the entire rpm range.

Going now to get some fuel system cleaner because I think even if it is a fouled injector, some fuel is getting by. Will also switch the coils to see if that's a problem as well. Any other ideas?

Car has 104,500 miles, had a full 90k service. I had the t-belt and front brakes replaced.

Thanks!

I don't know how severe your skip is but I had a similar problem on a 99 S70 a couple of years ago and the #5 piston had actually developed a crack in it. My skip was a really bad one. Felt like the engine was actually jumping around. My shop found it by running a compression test.

Hopefully your problem is a lot less severe but I wanted to let you know.

I switched two of the coils and ran the car, also switched the plugs and ran the car again. Both times I still came up with the same code, 305, cylinder 5 misfire. Can I test the injectors or should I just try to swap two of them after work tonight? I was hoping to not have to deal with the fuel system. Also, as if that weren't enough, I only have a manual for the 98-99 UK spec v70. Is any of this ignition stuff the same? I never had my '00 v70 apart to see. Is there a power stage feeding these coils that I can check?

I don't think so but I'm still wondering, is there any way for something to get slightly screwed in the timing belt change that would lead to this problem?

    Thanks All,
    Justin

Sorry about that. I had also posted this on another forum and followed up there.

Turns out, and it's embarrassing, that I had checked the wrong cylinder #5. I was counting by the firing order, and ended up switching two good coils and two good plugs so there was no change in the issue. I was in a hurry and hadn't had a chance to check all five in the dark, excuses excuses. But yes, it was just a bad coil. My indy mechanic replaced it with a used one and the car runs like a champ.

Don't be suprised when you have more coils take a dump on you down the road. These coils are usually good to go but more often then not when I get a customer in that has one bad coil they usually end up replacing them all, why do you think it is that your indy has a spare used coil laying around afterall? Because he swapped out an entire set on a car and through the used, still good ones, in the tester parts pile.

That's a very good point, thanks Mark. I'll definitely keep that in mind. I'm not sure if there is much of a performance degradation over time with the coils, or if they just work or don't, like a light bulb. At some point I'd love to get a new set of coils and also the VST REV kit.
