2008 V70 advice/thoughts V70-XC70

As posted in Garland's previous thread, I fell in love with the '08 V70 almost immediately as soon as I saw it at the Washington Auto Show.

My advice to my fellow Brickboarders- buy one if you can or if you want! This car is going to be a hit! I mean, this is a car that is breathtakingly gorgeous (to me at least!).

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I like it, but I wish it had a choice of engines rather than just the 3.2L gas hog.

Klaus,

You hit it right on the money. Almost every person at the Volvo display I talked to while I was observing the V70 said they wished the car still had the 5-cylinder.

And a 5 speed stick, although admittedly the stick did not sell well, perhaps because it wasn't readily available.

2008 V70 advice/thoughts - feedback loop V70-XC70

Dealers like to stock fully-equipped cars because the profit markup on accessories and extras is much higher than on the base car. Think of the math: $1000 for the auto trans, $1000 for sun roof, $1000 for leather seats; $1000 for the navigation, etc. Nice profit on these things. This business with the manual not selling well is part of a feedback loop. Few manuals are on dealer lots, so most buyers take what is available then and there rather than wait to order a car made to their specification. Then the dealers congratulate themselves on having done such a great job on judging the buying habits of the general public. One year they will stock mostly purple Volvos, and when they sell, they will be pleased that they were so astute to guess that people liked purple.
