upper rear engine torque rod bushing help 850 1996

Hello folks,

I'm trying to replace the upper rear engine torque rod bushing _ the big one on top of the engine that the arm from the firewall grabs. I've removed the old bushing and am having a heck of a time trying to get the new part pushed back into the mount on the engine. I thought I read somewhere (in the archives?) that this is a pretty east task and doesn't need a vise or a press but it's not appearing that way... Tips?

Thanks.

That all depends upon whether you are trying to stuff the original style bushing back in there or one of the two piece urethane replacement bushings in. The urethane ones will just about fall back in, they darn near never wear out but they do transmit more vibration into the firewall. The original style bushing will require some type of press or special tool to get it done. Funny as it sounds, I use an old B230 head bolt and a couple of the pieces from the factory trailing arm bushing tool set. Some of the early housings that hold that bushing were really not tapered that much and made installation a bit of a bitch. What I recommend that you need to do it is a threaded rod, a cup to pull it into, and a round piece with a hole in it to pull the bushing into the housing. If your housing is not tapered you might want to grind a bit of a bevel onto the starting edge of your new bushing and grease it up with a little lithium grease or silicone grease.

Thanks.

I was installing the original kind cause I don't want that extra vibration from the stiffer blue ones. I ended up making a press of sorts by welding a plate onto a BIG welding clamp and making a little stand-off jig for the other clamping surface. I also eased one of the edges to help get it started. Holy moly it's a tight fit.
