Coolant Leak 1998 S70 T5 S70 1998

Hi All,

Seasons greetings!

We're talking about a 1998 S70 T5 with 133K miles.

Coolant level slowly goes down. Coolant is evident on my garage floor, and on the plastic 'ridges' of the radiator just below where the upper hose meets the radiator and all ridges beneath and there is usually a drop of coolant 'waiting' to drop at the bottom of the radiator when looking beneath the car.

I did change the upper radiator hose and still have the same problem. I haven't accurately measured, but the rate of leakage seems to subside after the coolent level goes down an inch or two in the reservoir.

Am I correct to assume that the most likely cause is a hole in the radiator? If so, is it advised to attempt to patch up the radiator somehow or is it advised to simply buy a new one? What are some examples of patching?

Thanks a bunch, guys!

You are best off with a new radiator. The plastic elbows tend to break at the base and allow fluid to drip under pressure and high heat. They are fairly easy to replace.

Sounds like the typical radiator leak at the side tank, just go ahead and replace it. Take a close look at the expansion tank as well and make sure that it is not leaking from the connections there. Sometimes the plastic on the expansion tank itself cracks and necesitates replacing the tank. Make sure that you install a new thermostat when you do the radiator, I recommend a factory Volvo thermostat or a Wahler if you don't go factory. Use factory coolant while you are in there too.
