I've had a 98 V70 for two years now and love it! Sure am glad to find this sight. Could anyone tell me what to look for to find out if my car is a plain V70 or if it's an "R"? I did find a small chrome "W" in the ashtray. Don't know if it's from this car, but it does look like an emblem of some sort. thanks.

The R has AWD and a high pressure turbo, along with Alcantra lined seats and a few other goodies. If you have AWD and plain leather seats, then it has a light pressure turbo.
Most V70s are FWD plain jane non turbo, or GLT with a light turbo. The T5 model has a high pressure turbo.

A VIN would tell everything.

my V70 has black leather, and power everything. can you direct me to VIN decoder site? I don't know about the high or low pressure turbo.

i've got the AWD, but no stainless running boards. anyone know what the chrome "W" might stand for?

On the rear tailgate, right hand side where it says V70. Under that should be awd in slightly smaller letters.
I wonder if the previous owner removed the rear driveshaft and took the awd letters off?

That, or the AWD simply came off for whatever reason and just never got put back on.

If it were an R model, your "black leather" seats would have suede feeling inserts in the center portions. Additionally, you would have dark blue dash gauges, and an R on top of the engine.

ahhh, thanks klaus. i have some homework to do now with all that info you gave me. after looking at pics on this site, i am certain that the 'a' and 'd' have fallen off the tailgate. i definitely don't have suede inserts in the black leather seats, nor do i have an 'r' under the hood. i am assuming it's a V70 AWD with black leather and most other options. anyway, i should be able to decipher some things now with you guys help. thanks.

The only "R" on the 1998 model was on the tailgate, none on the engine cover or anywhere else.
