smoking steering wheel column 850

I have a 1993 volvo 850 with 180,000. Today a small stream of smoke came out of the steering wheel column. My right turn signal has been working off and on for the past week. Is the problem my turn signal switch? If yes, is it something I can fix, or should I take it to a mechanic? Also, is my car safe to drive until the problem is fixed?

Thanks,
Leah

Generally speaking electrical smoke coming from the steering column is not a good thing. Any shorted wireing while being rather serious in itself can lead to a much more serious problem. More shorted wireing and even a car fire. If I were you I'd disconnect the battery ASAP and not hook it back up until repairs are made. I think you'll need a #15 and #25 Torx wrench.

If you have a torx screwdriver, take off the plastic cover around the steering wheel and you will find your short. It is fairly easy to do, there are 4 screws. Once the cover is off, you can inspect the wires.
