850 Rear Engine Seal Replacement - Method 850

I have to replace the rear engine seal on my 95 850 NA with an auto trans. What are the opinions on the methods to replace:

- Pull just the engine up and out.
- Drop the trans down and out, including partial removal of the saddle.
- Pull both the engine and trans up and out.
- drop both the engine and trans with the saddle down and then remove the trans.

I replaced the clutch on my 93 850 a few years ago using method #2 and I am hoping for a bit easier time the go-round.

Opinions.

Tim

Method 2 is preferable and will be just the same as your clutch procedure. It is always easier the second time around.
    Good luck,

Myself I would go with #2. I would not drop the engine cradle down a little bit, I would tear that sucker out and toss it across the shop and out of my way. I would also go to Lone Star Tool and buy their OTC engine support bracket and support the engine. A tranmission jack would be nice with a big piece of foam to rest the trans on and one of those ratcheting band straps to strap it onto the head of the jack with. This is more or less how I do them in my shop and it works well, most of the techs that I know do them in a fairly similar fashion.

Yes, with a good engine support tool you can blow the engine cradle completely out of your way and then utilize the support tool to drop the engine and trans way down to facilitate removal.
The way they teach you to do it in Volvo school is to loosen the subframe bolts on the passenger side and to remove the ones on the driver's side and pull the subframe down as far as you can on the one side. This allows you to use the factory tool to slide in and around the subframe and pull the trans.
Next class I was in at Volvo school there were several techs there that said they were simply removing the subframe as it was not much more work and it allowed much more room to do what you need to do.
The big piece of foam idea I got from a Volkswagen/Volvo dealer tech that said they had been doing it like that on the front wheel drive VW's forever and it worked great.
The band strap I learned while working for BMW, boy did they do a boat load of V8 short blocks back then.
So I use a combination of the above techniques and because Volvo is really a small world and I know guys at all of the local dealers, those guys use whatever bits and pieces work for them.

            Mark,

Thanks for the detail. I have an engine hoist which I used on the Manual Trans 850 a few years back. Will employ that again but this time will probably bring it in from the side to give extra room for the floor/trans jack due to the legs on the hoist. I remember on the prior job walking the trans down a piece of plywood, replacing the seal and then walking it back up the plywood ramp. Did most of the job myself so I had to improvise.

            Tim
