New Koni struts on my car... V70-XC70 1998

Well, I found out what caused all of the noise on my right front strut. Inside the spring is a plastic thing that holds the dust cover on. Above that is a plastic clamp(?) that is fitted to a metal washer. The plastic clamp fell apart allowing the dustcover to flop around. $14 at the dealer. Spring seat looked good.

Because the car has almost 146K miles, I decided to go with Koni sport shocks. They are adjustable to give me the ride I want.

DID I SCREW UP???

When I reassembled the strut, the spring was compressed more than 11.81 inches, probably closer to 10inches. So when I put in the "star" nut it turned all of the way down to the end of the threads. Is this going to make it too tight? Should I take it all off, pull the spring to 11.81 inches and re-do the star nut? What is the correct translation to 11.81 inches? Is that from spring tip to spring tip?
How does one torque the star nut? I am using a set of channel pliers.

I will be doing the driver's side tomorrow morning.

Thanks,

Klaus

The star nut is on top of the spring seat and is never very tight. I just tighten it with a channel lock and the spring is not going to let it go anywhere. You have probably noticed there are very few things on a Volvo that need excessive tightening. Axel nuts, head bolts have specific tightening etc. but very few other items. Even the strut nut is only a minimal number of pounds.

So far my stuff is holding together,

The konis are on! The threads on both nuts on top of the strut tower have the same number of threads exposed.
As to the 11.81 inches of compressed spring, I compressed the second one to about that much - just under 12 inches - and it went together very nicely. The star nut did the same thing: it screwed down until it just stopped, period. It would not go any farther, regardless of torque.

I left them in the softest position for a short test run. My wife is going to like the softer ride, and I can make it harder when I am by myself. The car wheel well rose by about 1/4 inch, so no big deal. At least the expansion bumps don't feel as bad, and there is no longer any dive or lift with the brake or accelleration.

The bolts supplied by FCP are questionable. The old strut bolts were 17mm with 18mm nuts. The new ones have 15mm heads and 17mm nuts. I just might change them out one of these days. Also, the 6 nuts on the top of the strut tower were 10mm instead of 12mm.

Sorry I am so slow. It took me 2 hours per side, but I hate jacks and stands.

Nice conflict here... You say not to tighten too much and Rick, with his 2 850s says to leave it super tight!

If I have the star nut at the bottom of the threads on the shock tower, then it is probably too tight. Do I need to remove it all and do it over, with the spring at 11.81 inches? I assume that is the same as 11 7/8 inches?

I made an appointment to get the alignment done on Tuesday, so I have time. Besides, I also like driving the 850T, it is more fun than the R.

I dunno about how tight the nut needs to be or anything about the free vs. compressed length of the spring, so I'm not much help.

I do know that 0.8125 is exactly 13/16 and will make the observation that 10 or so inches is a heck of a lot less than 11 13/16. Could you glean any information/reference points from the old parts?

        Good luck,
        Will

All I can see now is the top center bolt. I can see the second thread of the shock over the top of the large bolt. On the driver's side (which I am about to do now), the large bolt has just 1 thread showing. Pretty close, about 1/8 inch difference.

I will remember to do a rough measure for 11 13/16 this time and see what the difference is. Post back later.
