1996 Volvo 850 GLT Wagon Runs Rough 850 1996

My 1996 Volvo 850 wagon / non turbo with 223K miles on it starts runs rough and stalls. First i had a bad ECT i replaced that and drove it for 6 months with no problems. I let the car sit for 14 days to return to a car that ran real rough with no codes being returned. I turned up the car plus, cap, rotor, fuel filter with no change. I then changed the MAF cleaned the injectors and tested relubed the o rings and re installed. Then i test drove the car with hesitation and stalling when attempting to idle then i noticed smoke coming from underneath the vehicle to find the cat glowing cherry red. I then replaced the cat with no change except when the car stalls i have a return code of P0410 Secondary air injection system. I also tested the fuel pressure at the inlet line feeding the fuel bar it is a steading 40 PSI while cranking and when taking the reading at the end of the fuel bar while it is running the pressure is @ 43 PSI. Can anyone help? PLEASE PLEASE Thanks The D.I. Man

    1996 Volvo 850 GLT Wagon Runs Rough 850 1996

had the same symptoms moreso when coming to a halt or when braking... after diy's of cleaning egr, replacing flame trap, ck maf connection, vacuum elbows, replace fuel & air filters, plugs, caps, rotors, dist wires, charcoal canister...

had to raise the white flag and much to my dismay brought my car to a new indy who loves to burn holes in a customers pocket only to find out i need a new air flow meter(easy to do) and had to modify the + of the battery due to electrical issues.

car runs better no more stalling but at times rough idling and indy says still have issues w/ the oil seperator and intake. For now I can live w/the rough idling after shelling $900.

    good luck

How do the plugs look? I would think a hot cat would be caused by a lean mixture and not a rich one. Anyway, maybe the air pump thermostat switch is bad and the pump isn't shutting off after the engine warms up. If it keeps pumping air into the exhaust that would overheat the cat too.

Were the symptoms that led you to replace the ECT the same as you describe now? Is it possible the new ECT, or more likely its wiring, is bad? Your temperature gauge on the dash reads off the ECT. What does it show?

A hot cat could be due to a very rich mixture. Do you have codes set too?

Thank you for for your reply. To answer your question. No it does not appear to be the ECT and or wiring and yes it does appear to be caused by a too rich mixture. The only code i receive is a P0410 secondary air injection system after it stalls. Do you kmow what the fuel pressures bare supposed to be at the fuel inlet on the fuel rail that would be the fuel pump pressure or the pressure @ the fuel rail outlet end? Thanks the diman

I don't know the correct pressure but I think 35-45 is found on most systems, and I have measured pressure on another car of mine and got 43 (that car runs normally). I once had a bad pressure regulator on an older Volvo and the pressure was much higher and fluctuated wildly on the gauge. I was led to check because that car was running very rich and a new reg cured it. It was an open and shut case. Your case doesn't seem to match that at all.

Could your injectors be sticking badly - maybe some contamination or deposits got into your fuel system (though I admit this would probably leave you too lean, not too rich)?

You replaced the cat - could there be an obstruction further down the exhaust system?

Sorry, I didn't remember you had already attended to injectors.

Does the car behave the same from cold start, warm start, after a long drive, after a short drive? Does the problem come up right away?
