V70 clutch issue V70-XC70

Just got a call from my teenager son who was driving my 1998 V70 n/a (5 speed). He stopped the car and now it won't move. The motor runs ok but revs without causing the car to move even when it is in gear. Everything seemed fine when I last drove it yesterday. Could it be a matter of just bleeding the clutch or does it sound like it needs to be replaced? I had thought that clutches show symptoms of wear before going out but this one was fine until today. There are 135,000 miles on the car, don't know if the clutch has been replaced before. Thanks to all!

Unless you hit something, I would suspect the linkage has slipped. These clutches usually are good for 200K miles. Of course, if your son was learning how to speed shift...

I just installed a new driver side driveshaft in the car a week ago. Could this somehow be related to the shifting problem?

        LOL
You found your problem! I was on the Audi forum a couple of weeks ago when someone had the same problem, except it was AWD. The driveshaft of one of the wheels came loose and he lost all propulsion. The neat thing was that the speedometer would show speed when in gear and gas applied! The differential was just spinning :) He shoved the shaft back in and drove home, carefully.

        Yes!

Had this happen to my own manual tranny car after replacing a passenger side driveshaft. About a week after the work the bearing came loose on the shaft, allowing it to slip out of the tranmission output. With the open differential, it just turns the side that's not connected. No motion in any gear or clutch position.

Have a look under there where the driveshafts come out of the transmission. It may be as easy as just shoving the shaft back in (for the meantime until you can get it home and fix it).

I got the faulty driveshaft (a cheap chinese one) from FCP Groton. They kindly accepted it back and refunded my money. I got the next one from Napa.

If this is the problem I suggest replacing the output seal on the transmission while you're in there as it may have been damaged. Also, you may have lost some tranny fluid in the process that should be replaced.

        Good luck,
        Will

Were you able to move the shifter without pushing in the clutch? I am kind of concerned that I may have other problems as well as the driveshaft now, since I can move the shifter in and out of gear positions without pushing in the clutch.

Got the axle out (also from fcpgroton) and the end that goes into the transmission was broken off along with most of the circlip. They are going to send me a new one for free but I am kind of nervous now about the quality of the product as well as the bits of the broken shaft and circlip that must be floating around somewhere in my transmission.

Fortunately, they don't float. When I got some diff fluid for my 164, the bottle had a nipple top. If you could get a bottle designed like that, you could use it as a squeeze gun and shoot oil through the axle hole and try to flush the tranny, with the drain plug open.
Examine, carefully, the dumped oil and pretend you are NHTSA trying to find all of the parts of the axle.

What a bummer. I appologize for suspecting your teenager. I don't care how hard he may have dumped the clutch and at what rpm, that axle should not fail like that.

Thanks for the advice. I tried using compressed air, magnets and then the oil flush into the coffee filter to get the broken pieces out but failed.

One thing I did find was that the reverse light switch opening on the top of the transaxle is a great place to put in new oil. Much easier than trying to pump oil in horizontally though the fill hole. I had removed the reverse light switch for replacement purposes anyway. Hope this will help someone.

Isn't the tranny drain plug the same as the engine oil plug? If so, you could get a magnetic plug. Lets hope the pieces just sit on the bottom.

It's not like an automatic with pumps, just a nice bath of oil.

            WOW!

Can you tell what caused it to fail (crack, flaw in metal)? I'd be nervous too -nervous even about whether the paint on these things has lead in it...

The one I got from Napa was also "Made in China", but appeared to be of much better quality than the one from FCP.

Since it's on the drivers side you may be able to get some of the broken bits out through the drain plug as it's on that side also.

            Good luck,
            -Will

Brand name is FEQ, which stands for "First Equipment Quality", also sold by autohausaz. Looks like it was just a low-quality forge. Either there was a flaw in the metal shaft or the circlip just broke. Here is a picture.

Wow, amazing story. I suggest you buy genuine Volvo parts for the repair, even if they do cost more at first. They will probably save money over time.

Received the replacement drive shaft that fcpgroton sent me without additional charge yesterday. It looks different than the first one they sent. Hopefully, it is better quality. I will install it asap and report back. Have had no luck fishing out the pieces of the old axle that fell into the transaxle. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (have tried oil flush, magnets, compressed air and shop vac.
