How else to clear Not Ready state? S70 1998

1998 S70 T5, 147K miles- I have cleared an OBD II code I got after disonnecting the battery, but the OBD II system still reads as "Not ready". Is there any thing I can do other than the 2-trip drive cycle routine to make it go into the ready state? I am having trouble finding enough traffic-free open road to do the drive sequences. I know of a local indy Volvo specialist. Is there any chance he'll be able to hook up and fix it electronically, or does it have to be the dealer?
Thanks

I had the same issue when I replaced the battery in my car over two years ago. The readiness codes failed when going throuhg inspection. I have the tech notes for the Volvo readiness codes in a pdf file if you are interested. After showing the tech notes to the "wonderful" people at the Delaware DMV and "discussing" the matter for 45 minutes they passed my car through inspection. Now this past summer I had to get my car inspected again. It had been over two years and many driving miles since my readiness codes failed and I had done the driving sequence Volvo recommended but all of this was to no avail. As I suspected the codes failed once agin but lucky for me I kept a copy of the tech notes and gave them to DMV and they passed my car without any hassle this time. In my opinion the rediness codes will never reset and this is just a flaw in the OBDII for certain model years.

      Hi wesky,
Would you care to share those tech notes for the readiness codes? And what did you actually say to convince the DMV folks to grant you a waiver? When you suggest that this might be a flaw in the OBDII for certain models, are you implying that certain ECU modules are inherently faulty, and as such a different/more recent ECU module would resolve the matter? Or is the OBDII system separate and distinct from the ECU module, rendering exchanges of ECU modules useless?
How does one go about performing the driving sequence recommended by Volvo? Thanks

I have the same problem with my 96 850 with the NY system. If I take it to the local garage for inspection it fails for "readiness codes not set". I then have to take it to Volvo and it passes without any problems. This has happened two years in a row. Now I just take it Volvo for inspection. It looks like the dealers have the ability to override the system. The S70 passes at the local garage OK even after I replaced the battery.

        Hi TomL
Would you care to divulge how much the dealer charges you to override the readiness code process? Thanks

They have only charged me the normal NY state inspection fee, $21.

You cannot run a program to make the computer "ready". Just drive it.

You just have to drive it and check it in a day or two.

I don't have your model, but I think I remember hearing it just takes some driving time for this state to go away. I may be way off base.

Actually I have just dealt with this same issue here in Massachusetts only a few days ago, and I would have to disagree with the "just drive it" suggestion as it applies to certain vehicles.
Mine is a 98 S70 GLT and initially failed inspection for emissions and safety matters. After all emissions and safety matters were addressed it failed once again for failure to complete "overall readiness" diagnostic cycle. The advice conveyed was to drive it over a period of a week or so, combining city and highway miles. After 4 weeks of driving extensively, and repairing ABS module in addition to replacing 'TWO' ECU units, all without a single instance of check engine light, it would have failed again the third time around for failure to complete the "overall readiness" diagnostic cycle.
In effect, as several volvo competent mechanics repeatedly noted, it doesn't matter how long or in what mode I would have driven; for the result would still have been the same.
And it would appear that this is endemic, since the Massachusetts emissions folks have waived the "overall readiness" diagnostic requisite for this particular vehicle; which is only fitting since it passed all the individual safety and emissions system control checks.

There are problems getting the early year model OBD II Volvos to post all of the readiness codes and there is a service bulletin that addresses it. If the vehicle was still under warranty Volvo will actually pay 3 hours warranty time to run the drive cycles necessary to set the readiness codes, what does that tell you about the complexity of that one, even the Swedes know it is a nightmare. That being said, there is no way to force the monitors up in that system, you either drive it and bring it up via drive cycles or you live with it. It's a frigging nightmare for a smog tech, ask me how I know.

Hi Mark. If I read your post correctly, it will *eventually* clear? In other words, there isn't a bug that prevents the "ready" state from occuring? It is just a complex (evidently) set of driving conditions?

It figures Volvo would come up with something like this. Engineers!

            Hi there TimeToBakeTheDonuts,
How could I perform such a set of complex driving conditions to resolve the readiness codes? Thanks

Yep, you read it right. I remember one that I did, we drove it through a drive cycle, brought it back to the shop and shut the engine off but left the key in the on position so that it kept the computer alive, threw a fan on the engine and cooled it down far enough that it would go into another drive cycle, took it out and drove it through another cycle and this brought all of the monitors up. Getting early year model 850/S70 readiness codes to post can be an absolute son of a bitch.

Your posts got my attention, being that this issue still bugs me to no end. Even though my 98 S70 eventually passed MA inspection, the issue lingers, since it has yet to post the readiness codes.
Question 1: Is this something I could resolve without the aid of a mechanic and/or Volvo dealer?
Question 2: If so, how would I go about driving through the necessary drive cycles to bring the monitors up?
Question 3: Would this process have to be repeated before future inspections? I simply would like to have all the monitors up and functional, irrespective of the fact that this particular vehicle was granted a waiver. Thanks for your informative posts.

I am home for the holiday right now and do not have access to the drive cycle information, I will post it on Monday when I get back to the rock pile. Yes, you can bring the monitors up by yourself as it is only a matter of driving the vehicle in a predescribed manor. Once the monitors or the readiness codes, same thing, are up they will stay up until they are reset with a scan tool or the battery is disconnected.

Well, I hate to do this to you but the bulletin is 8 pages long, 2 of which outline the drive cycle necessary to bring up the monitors. It is a PDF file but it will not let me copy it here for whatever reason. One important note though is that it does say that all 96 year model cars reset the readiness monitors everytime the key is cycled. So in the event that you do get all of the codes up they will be cleared everytime you shut the car off. You need to put it throught the prerequisite Trip and take it right to the smog shop and have it smogged without shutting the car off. Friggin' brilliant huh?

Thanks for the effort anyway. BTW if you still have that PDF file with the drive cycle bulletin handy would it be too much to ask if you could possibly email it instead?
On the matter you pointed out concerning the reseting of the readiness monitors every time the key is cycled, does this condition affect solely the 96 models or the 98 models (including S70 GLT) as well?
Hope it only applies to pre-98 models. Thanks again.

Thank you so much for the info. It will be interesting to read what exactly those drive cycles call for. Thanks Rule 308.
