Which engine is preferred? XC90 2007

Hi All,

Considering purchasing a 2007 or 2008 XC90, and was wondering what the conventional wisdom is concerning which engine is preferred. I'm interested in anecdotal advice regarding reliablility, ease of maintenance (is the alternator really under the intake manifold on the I6?), anything else worth talking about.

Maintenance-wise, just looking for how easy it is to do the routine stuff: plugs, hoses, belts, thermostat, engine torque bushings (which Volvos seem to eat!), etc.

Thanks in advance!

V-8 has been wonderfull from the outset. The 3.2 is a bit iffy. The alternator drive system is different indeed. Requires special tools to align everything. Of the 2 engines I think the V-8 is more user freindly, and definitely more reliable

I'm not intimately aware of all the engine options in the XC90, but I'll take a stab.

As I understand it, the V8 is designed (and built?) by Yamaha. I do not believe that is a bad thing. IMO, Yamaha builds a quality product. Logic would dictate that the extra displacement of the V8 would mean that it is strained less than a lower power/higher boost motor in the same vehicle. I think this may not really be the case with this V8 as it would appear to be a screamer just like the rest.

If I'm not mistaken, the turbo 5cyl has already been replaced by the new 3.2L 6cyl (normally aspirated) for 2007. Yes, the alternator is tucked up under the intake. It doesn't look at all DIY-friendly, but that's what it took to get a 3.2L six in the space of the old 5cyl. On paper, it looks like a sweet engine. Given the choice, I would definitely choose the new six over the old T5 or T6.

There was a short article about the new I6 in Automotive Engineering a number of months back. If it means something to you, I could dig it up, scan and email it...

Hmm, a little searching around yielded this description of the Yamaha V8:

Let me see, the T6 is so hot it fries the engine compartment, the 3.2 and V8 chug gasoline, the battery is in the trunk and cannot be replaced at home, the wiring casings are still "green" material and fall apart, its not a car anymore, gas milage is poor, access to anything in the engine compartment requires little hands and multiple elbows, the 3rd row seat is a joke...
Why not just buy a Suburban and have a REAL experiance.
