Leaking Muffler Under Drivers Area 850

Hi All:

Just wanted to post a fix for the leaking exhaust problem there have been many posts lately. I took the car to a muffler shop and the mechanic said I needed a new clamp from Volvo. I got one at the dealer for 13.00 plus new bolts and took the car back. Anyway, he took the old one off and found a couple holes on the ball of the muffler joint. So he cut the ball off and welded a new section in on the muffler side and clamped the converter side. Car is quiet as a mouse now. He charged me 30.00.

nice shop. I had a similar leak and a shop insisted there was no choice but to buy the entire system for $1300. I didn't bite since all the rest of the system was solid. Wonder if there's a place on the web to list poor operators and charlatans.

      KSG:

The nice thing about an 850 exhaust it that it's held in place by rubber hangers. The mechanic could cut the ball out, tip the whole muffler part down to weld all aound the new piece and then just slide over the cat part and clamp. If anyone has this problem, keep looking for a shop that will cut and weld. My exhaust is still rock solit after 13 years.
