Flashing Upshift Indicator 850 1994

My 94 850 automatic non-turbo sat for a few weeks. When I use it now, the upshift arrow on the dash and the sport/economy button on the console are blinking. It shifts fine and the fluid level is good. The check engine light used to come on for a minute at start up because of a bad odometer gear. That stopped when the new problem started. Is that connected? Thanks for the feedback.

Be sure the mechanic checks the transmission "grounding strap". If it's loose the flashy thing will come on and it has nothing to do with mountain dew or the pnp switch. Your car will just flash and stop working completly. It's really scary I can tell you.

I had this very thing happen to my '96 850 N/A wagon. If it is the same fault it is very disconcerting but not too urgent. If Klaus's advice for the PNP switch doesn't check out, have the shop check your transmission mode switch. It's the one on the console with the sport/ econ/ winter options. Mine failed at about 180K miles and scared the bejejus out of me. If I remember correctly, and you'd think I would if it was a nightmare, it wasn't very expensive to replace.

No, they are not connected. Odometer gears are known to loose a tooth and stop working.
What you need to do is check the DTCs in the A-1 slot and find out why the up shift arrow is flashing. This is a real problem. I suggest you retrieve all of the codes in A-1, clear them, and see what comes back. It will probably be the PNP switch failing.

      Thanks Klaus,

I'll get it to the shop ASAP.

Do two things before you bring it to a shop. With the key in the on position, but the engine off, rapidly move the shift lever from R to L and back again about 20 times. This should temporarily clean off the contacts inside the PNP switch box.
Also, go to the 700/700 FAQs and look up OBD (Onboard Diagnostic Codes) and how to read them yourself. It is so simple and then you will know what the real problem is. http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineOBDCodes.htm
