I beg to differ. The tranny cooler in the radiator is a great idea, except when you live in Texas or other warm spots and have the AC on all of the time. The radiator is behind the AC condenser, an extremely hot piece of gear, which does not help the cooling effect of the tranny and oil cooler built in to the radiator.
The fluid pump in the tranny works off of engine rpms, so that the higher the rpms the higher the flow rate. Volvo suggests that when you are hauling heavy loads or a trailer up hill, down shift to a lower gear to assist the cooling. That just means pumping more fluid through the cooler to keep the temp down.
Having an aux cooler in front of the radiator, down low to catch the air from the opening in the lower bumper scoop would be ideal for hot climates.
Any tranny cooler on the market for American cars would work, so long as the inside pipe connections are of the same size as is currently on the Volvos. The AC systems are not Volvo specific, thank goodness, so just making sure the cooler fits into the radiator opening should suffice.
