Oil leak in S70 T-5 S70 1998

I am looking at a 98 S70 T-5 but it has a slight oil leak. I was wondering if anyone knows if there are any notorious problems concerning oil leaks, and wether or not it would be a good idea to buy the car. Thanks,

Matt

If the "slight" leak is coming from the tranny area, it could be a rear main seal - $$$$. If it is coming from the backside of the engine, between firewall and engine, it could be the turbo oil return line - easy fix. If it is coming from under the radiator, it could be a turbo that needs a new oil seal and the cost of a reman turbo is about $300.
    Can you trust the seller?

      RMS Oil leak in S70 T-5 S70 1998

I also had oil leaking from my V70, but it's a non turbo. Obviously it wasn't the turbo. I cleaned off the oil with several cans of Brake Cleaner and them could clearly see the oil coming from the weep hole between the engine and transmission joint. About a 6 inch pool on the garage floor every night. It was definitely engine oil not transmission fluid. My PCV system was in very poor shape and was replaced. The leak continues.

Has anyone ever paid for a RMS repair at a dealership. How much was it? Anyone had this done at an independent shop? My RMS is leaking and I'm thinking of what my options are. I know it's a big job. Thanks.

        RMS Repair S70 1998

I have look further into changing the RMS. The local dealer wants 11 hours @$120 per hour plus the seal and subframe bolts for almost $1500.00. An independent wanted 10 hours at $80 per hour or slightly more than half. The independent had worked at this dealership before, has 25 years experience and is Volvo certified. Plus he seemed much more experienced than the 25 year old service writer at the dealer who said RMS failures were "rare" in SV70s. We all know better than that, right? I personally prefer talking/groking the guy who is going to wrench on my V70.

It is a big job. All of the suspension bits on the driver's side have to be removed, the subframe loosened and lowered, before the tranny is removed. The $30+ part is replaced and everything else is labor charge. Still not as bad as an AC evaporator.
Call your local dealer and ask for a quote, same for any Volvo independents. I would not reccomend a non-volvo shop, the possibilities of screw ups are too great.
