surging rpm 850

I have a '93 volvo 850 with 179,000. I recently replaced the mass air flow sensor, air filter, and just installed a new battery the other day. When I start the car, the rpm surges to 1500, rises to 2100, and drops to 1500. The car revs like this until I turn it off. I've let it run for about 5 min. and it doesn't stop. I've tried different times of day with no difference. No check engine lights.

Someone mentioned it might be the throttle positioning sensor. Any other ideas or confirmation? Or possibly a cheaper way of fixing the problem?

Thanks,
Leah

Maybe check the Volvospeed site "Bay 13". I think the early 850's had problems with the MAS connector and wireing.

Check for air leaks first. Ensure the position of the new MAF sensor is correct and the clamps on the air hose are tight. Also check all lines coming from/to the intake manifold are tight.

Had the same problem. Change petrol pressure regulator(leaks to manifold)
