Gurus! Tell me about Volvo V70. V70-XC70

Hello, all gurus and Volvo enthusiasts!

A friend of mine is considering buying 1-2 years old V70, and he is asking what configuration is better and what possible "diseases" this model can have.

Thanks in advance.

D.

Eventhough I cannot drive the P2 models because of the rake in the windshield, all 3 models are nice. I particularly like the ECC, just set the temp and forgetaboutit.
But, it depends on your friends need for speed. They all cruise at 75mph without a problem, but there is a vast difference between the 3 different engine types. The LPT is a good compromise, the N/A gets the best milage, and the T5 goes like a bat out of hell. But the T5 still gets 20-21mpg around town and 26-28mpg on the highway.
If you can find a manual tranny, get it. Especially if it is a turbo. The increased torque the turbo gives you will force a down shift when you want it least.
The new awd systems are pretty reliable if your friend goes skiing a lot, but it will cost 2mpg year round plus additional maintenance.
Don't bother with the additional child "seats" in the back, they are not worth the weight. But a roof rack is nice to have.

Klaus, can you explain what you mean about not being able to "drive the P2 models because of the rake in the windshield"? I assume you are tall (I am 6'4") and that there is some problem with visibility or comfort in these models? I currently drive a '95 855, and when/if it dies would consider a V70, so that's why I'm interested. Thanks.

It's not just Volvo. All of the new cars on the market have steeply raked windshields to reduce their coefficient of drag (I assume) and increase gas milage. But, this caused the roofline to be lowered where it meats the glass.

I have ample headroom, at least 1 inch, with the seat reclined in a comfortable position. Leg room is also not a problem, eventhough my inseam is measured at 36 inches. The problem is visibility, or lack of.

The rearview mirror is positioned farther forward and lower than the 850/V70s that I currently own. This causes a complete blind spot for the right side of the viewing area. At a 4 way stop, I cannot see a car sitting at the stop sign on my right. About 50 feet is lost due to the placement of the rearview mirror and the blackout paint surrounding it.

I also find that I am looking through the tinted portion of the windshield when looking 1/4 mile ahead. I currently find the sun visors useless, except in blocking vision when they are in the parked position.

I realize, that at 6'7" or 201cm tall, I am above average. Putting a curve in the roof line to increase headroom does little for those of us that need the additional room. It would be nice to see out of the front of the cabin and be safe.

No Guru here but I did sleep at a ..... Actually I own an 01 V70 T5 manual. Frankly I love it. My favorite parts af the car: It is safer than my former Yukon. It corners completely flat.No body roll or tire squeal. The braking is the same,no dive at all. Just STOPPING.It feels quick, love the boost! At 84k miles it is incredibly tight and quiet. The cloth sport seats are near perfect, heated and full power to boot. I average just under 20 mpg in town. I can put the back seats down and carry ridiculous amounts of stuff. It was very inexpensive to buy. The bad part? My dealer must have a very nice boat. The car has to go to the dealer for almost everything. The guys at my local independent shop don't wont to even look at it. The computers have to be programmed when the car is worked on. I just got clipped for a throttle pedal along with my "free" recall. A wire in my climate control had to be soldered with an ac compressor replacement? When it is good it is fantastic. When it is bad it is gonna cost.
