Oil leak after changing to Mobile 1

What does anyone think of this. My 1998 S70 has 85000 miles on it and had no oil leaks until I chnaged the oil and filter to Mobile 1 5w-30 (6 quarts). The leak is at bottom of the engine where it bolts to the tranny. It started about 2 days after the oil change. Could it be the synthetic oil?

I've had the same experience - switch to synthetic, leaks start right away, change back to conventional oil and the leak stops. There are still people who swear that the tendancy for synthetic oil to leak is an old wives tale. The theory goes that it was a problem when synthetics first came out but then they put in stop leak additives and solved the problem. Seems to me you can just look at the stuff pouring out of the bottle and see that it would be more prone to leak. It pours just like water. It's got just to be more prone to leak than something that pours like molasses.

A very good possibility. Your new oil probably cleaned the sludge off of the rear main seal, which had dried out, and is now going to be a problem. The sudden change to 5W30 also didn't help.
You will also want to check the oil breather system. With the engine running, take out the oil dipstick and place a large piece of paper over it. If it is trying to draw the paper in, then that is good. If the paper is being pushed off, your oil trap and lines need to be cleaned out/replaced.

Some folks claim that changing back to nonsynthetic eliminates the problem. Long shot but may be worth a try. Certainly check for crankcase pressure as suggested.

I had this problem on another vehicle (older Porsche) and had to switch back for that very reason (with 10 quarts on a change it was getting frustrating to watch the drip, drip, drip of expensive syn oil on my garage floor). I switched back and no leaks at all.

Pelican Parts BBS has a lot of info on seal problems when going from a dino oil to a synthetic.
