S80 Dies after cold startup, but otherwise runs great 1999 S80 1999

Hello all,

I was frequent board reader the last couple years diagnosing my 260, then my 760, and now my next apparent outcast, a 1999 S80.

Anyway, I cleaned the throttle body last weekend, which alleviated some symptoms, but it still dies right after startup (like my 760). Only when cold from sitting overnight, and restarts fine after then 2nd attempt. Runs great otherwise. In addition to the TB cleaning, I replaced the fuel filter a week or so ago to no avail. The car has about 95,000 mi. on it. I was thinking a coolant temp sensor, but I tried the test of disconnecting the AMM to see if it starts better, but that required 3 start attempts to get it going, versus the normal 2 attempts.

It's not an emergency, but still an annoyance that makes me unhappy :( But I love the challenge.

Thanks again.
Aaron

    Aaron,

You might want to get the SW upgraded for the Engine Control Module (ECM). There were many different upgrades for different engines for cold starting problems.

While your at it, get a complete system upgrade, I believe the cost difference for an ECM upgrade versus a total upgrade should be very similar. But of course that all depends on where you take it.

    Aaron,
You are a glutton for punishment with all of those 6 cylinder Volvos :)

Let's discount the ETM and leave it out of the equation. It sounds like you are not at full fuel pressure at the first start attempt. When it is cold, try turning the key to on twice, or wait for the fuel pump to stop whirring before starting the engine.
On the 240s there was a check valve by the fuel pump/filter to keep the gasoline from being syphoned back into the tank when the pressure dropped. Your symptoms sound exactly like that... getting air into the fuel line.

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)
