which oil viscosity to use....... 850 1996

I have noticed that the initial start-up of the day for my parents 850 it seems like for a second the oil pump is having difficulty getting the oil to the top of the engine. I should state that I am in warm, if not outright hot California, and the oil my parents are using is 20/50 Valvoline. I should also mention that it is a non-turbo. I was thinking of going to a lower viscosity, in an effort to see if that solved the problem, and was wondering what people thought. My two options, as I see it, are 15/40 or 10/40. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Vielen dank :)

    From your owner's manual:

I've been using the recommended 10W30 for the last 173,000 miles. I figured that's what Volvo recommends and since they built the thing, maybe they know something about it.

If you look at the back of the owners manual, under specifications, you will see a chart of oil requirements. Your oil is much too thick and will decrease the gas milage.

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

We are discussing engine oil, so the answer is synthetic oil. Parafin(wax) or graphite(pencil lead)??

BTW, did you get an owner's manual for your car yet? There is also a Pocket Data Booklet which has ALL of the codes and other specs for the 850. Each is about $25 at the dealer, or you can call Volvos 800 number and order both for about $40. That way, when you read the codes on your 1995, you will have a ful explaination of what they mean. Probably the best feature of a 1995.

Thank you for the help! I am thinking that 10/40 is the way to go. I am going to change the oil this weekend, and see what happens. Just to let everyone know: My dad has been using 20/50 in his Volvos since '75, and has always got 300k plus out of his engines. It just seems that the pump is having problems getting the oil to the top of the engine in the morning. Have a wonderful evening one and all :)
