Power Antenna Repair/Replacement S70 1998

Hi All...now that I have repaired my ABS module and done the AC "bread clip" fix...thanks to all your help...I am ready to tackle the broken power antenna.

The antenna has "rusted" so that it only goes up the first length. We are taking a long driving trip and I would like to get better reception.

I have tried a couple of times to "pull" it up with a firm grip...and have tried to use WD-40 to loosen the rust...neither step has worked and it has been like this for a couple of years. BTW...it works fine...just no "reach".

Is there another repair process that I could try?

If no repair is it difficult to install a new antenna? About what does one cost and where can you buy to get a better price on an OEM part w/o going to the dealer oarts department?

Any advice would be apprecaited...Tom R in Two Harbors, Minnesota

I just got a mast from IPD, $15.00 + shipping, includes very good instructions on what has to be done.

You could buy an antenna mast from one of the online parts stores for $25-30 + shipping.
Or,
I took mine out of my long gone 780 which had the same problem. Just remember which way the teeth on the belt are pointed so you can get it back in.
I removed the mast and put the large part in a gental vice. Then I took my regular pliers and looped them just behind the top knob on the antenna, without touching the mast. The part of the pliers that are still open when gripped.
Light tapping with a hammer on the pliers until the mast extended.
I cleaned, with WD40, and pushed/pulled on the mast until it was easy to move. Then reinstalled. That worked for a long time.
I guess it is possible to tap the mast head up with the same tools, but any bend will render it useless, along with scratches.

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)
