Trip Odometer Resets Itself? V70-XC70 2004

Just got the car. Volvo certified used car with 47k miles. I was tracking mileage, for whatever for I don't know.

Funny thing. Every now and then the trip odometer zeros itself back. I know that I'm not touching the reset knob because it's recessed into the cluster and hard to do without deliberately pressing it in.

Has this happened to anyone else?

It shouldn't be recessed??? It should stick out so that you can toggle between trip1 and trip2. A reset means holding the button down for more than 2 seconds.

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

Trip Odometer Resets Itself? V70-XC70 2004

I should have written that the cluster was recessed into the dash. The button/shaft sticks out , but nonetheless, it's not easily actuated inadvertently so it's no explanation for the trip O reseting itself. I wonder if anyone else had seen this happen before.

I can leave the car parked somewhere, and apparently through some unintentional event or action, the trip O's (both) reset to zero when I come back to the car. Weird, huh?

Some 04's were delivered with a sooftware glitch that caused the triip to reset to zero at 999 km, even though it reads in miles. (aprox 620 miles). The corection was a software upgrade to the driver info module. This may be your problem. Another possibility is it is losing power for unknown reasons. Voltage loss will reset it ti zero.

Trip Odometer Resets Itself? V70-XC70 2004

Went to the dealer today to get some stuff fixed that was prearranged before I agreed to buy the car.

Hung with my trusty 900 series mechanic (changing an AC compressor on a 1999 v70) while someone else worked on mine. Just before things wrapped up I asked my guy about the odometer. He said, "tell the other mechanic to check for a software update". I went to the other service bay and asked the other mechanic if it was a possible I was having this problem with the trip odometer or was I was crazy. He smiled back at me and told me I was not crazy. He said there was a software fix for it. Then he told me I should be glad I didn't buy an s80 ... everything is software on that car. He said he loaded the update.

Later, my salesguy laughed. He says the mechanics always say it's a software update and service charges a fortune to hook you up.

I'll keep you posted ......

A while back you asked about "Volvo Only" on 7 mile and whether he works on FWD volvos. The question was closed to new answers so I couldn't resond to that question.

Yes, Ed fry works on FWD, but he has enough work with the older volvos. You can stop by his place, but he works by himself and doesn't have a lot of time to chat.

Ed Fry at Volvo Only V70-XC70 2004

Ed Fry seems to be on the up and up. I called him a couple of times and stopped in once. He says his son works with him now and it's been a god-send. I did not know ED worked on FWD. I thought only RWD. My problem is that he's in a marginal (if not lousy) neighborhood. Seven mile road and telegraph is not a place for a stroll at night and you can't drop your car off after hours. He has a loyal following and enough work. His cards say "very reasonable". I would use him.
