Tracs off and ABS lights lit??? 850 1997

Hello all,
My daughter's 850 sedan with 174k plus miles is giving her fits. She is intermittantly getting these warning lights and feeling a vibration and a reduced braking power. of course I drove the car to work today and tried locking the brakes up in the parking lot, and they do lock up, so the system does not appear to be working properly. What are some common ailments in this system? Are there codes displayed or do you need the code reader to plug in.
I also had a question about how to reset the service light. Any help would be greatly apprecited. I did find the battery terminals severely cruddy, cleaned them up, no difference in ABS system.
Thanks.
Chuck Jaxel....

Is it safe to drive the V with the ABS removed? Have to send it to Victor.

When the ABS module is out of the car, you will not have ABS, TRKS, or a speedometer. Just keep your distance from the car in front of you, drive sanely, and stay out of deep water.
Quite safe.

Thanks for the replies. So does the whole ABS unit have to come out? Then the car is inoperative during the repair, since the hydraulic lines will be disconnected? Or is the a replacable module attached to the hydraulic unit?
I am in Pine Hill, NJ, 15 miles from Philadelphia, PA. Not sure where College Station is. Where can one fine a service reset tool?
Thanks....
Chuck Jaxel.

Thanks, you were right. So I guess I have to figure on it being the ABS unit.
Thanks again.

ANSWER Tracs off and ABS lights lit??? 850 1997

I would say that it is time to call victor. He will fix your abs unit.

I also had the same problems, with both my 98 s70 and my 97 850. The Volvo unit is VERY prone to failure at or before the mileage you have. My s70 failed at 115k, the 850 somewhere before 170k.

search victor rocha in the forums for his information. Read the posts where people mention him and check your symptoms.

Good luck.

BTW, he is a far cheaper alternative to a new volvo unit.

hope this helps!

ANSWER Tracs off and ABS lights lit??? 850 1997

Your ABS module needs to be repaired. Victor at http://home.earthlink.net/~vicrocha/

will fix it for around $140. Most autoparts stores will let you use a universal scanner to check for codes and delete them. Those codes that come back are the problem.

Just ignore the service light. Most either put a black piece of tape over it or remove the bulb when changing the burned out bulbs in the instrument cluster.

Just an FYI Klaus, some states (texas for example) require the service light be OFF when gettings the car smog tested. The major cities like Houston Dallas and El Paso test for this when they start that car. I was TOLD that a lit "SERVICE" or check engine light would fail the car.

i am not sure if this is relavent to any other testing states.

If you are near College Station, drop by and I will extinguish your service light. Just happen to have the tool and it takes perhaps one minute.

What? Those states don't have common sense? "service" just means bring it in for an oil change, at the "dealership". It has nothing to do with smog.
The dealer lobby wins again.

The reason I was quoted was "The service light generally indicates that an engine service such as an oil change is required, and is generally nothing serious. The service light may also illuminate due to faulty emmission controls or emmission controls that need to be serviced or replaced"

complete load of junk!

I'm not so sure that the service stations ACTUALLY check this. We removed the lamp behind the service light in one of our 850's and it passed even though the check list says that it must illuminate before ignition and turn off after starting the car.

I know it sounds completely illogical ... but it turns out to be true. This link takes you to the applicable page in the Texas Smog Inspection regulations:

http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/vi/publications/rules/emis_manual/CH3.htm

See paragraph "03.25.02 ORDER OF INSPECTION", line 6.

So, it appears that the great state of Texas can mandate that you change your oil strictly in accordance with the automaker's recommendation ... OR ELSE!!!!!

(Time to move to Texas and buy a Jiffy Lube franchise)

The unintended consequence of this idiocy is that a motorist will never change his oil earlier than required; if he does, his "Service" light will be reset and, thus, illuminate earlier, and he will risk failing his smog test.

I wonder what prevents a motorist from buying a Service Light reset tool and ensuring that his light is never illuminated during a smog test.

(Time to move to Texas and set up shop next to an inspection station with my own SL reset tool $$$$$$$$)
