loud noise from rear right wheel V70-XC70

Hi:

Yesterday I had new tires installed on my 1998 V70 (119K km). On the way home, the car started to make a loud noise from the rear. Sounds almost like a foghorn and appears to be harmonic. This sound starts after the vehicle has traveled a short (1-2miles) distance. I had a similar experience in the spring when I changed from snow to summer tires, so I know that the problem wasn't caused by the new tires put on yesterday.

I originally thought that the noise was due to rust particles getting into the brakes but am unsure if this is the case now. Today, I removed the caliper, rotator and disks. The rotator was a bit rusty, but both sides were clean as were the disks... so I conclude that the caliper is working OK. I cleaned everything up and then reassembled the disk assembly.... the noise was still there. We did learn that the noise appears to be coming from the caliper assembly; some vibration accompanies the noise. I backed the emergency brake shoe off was far as possible, I don’t believe that this is the source of the sound.

One thing I noted was that the pins holding the disks in place were very rusty. I thought perhaps this rust might be stopping the disks sliding and perhaps causing the noise, so I removed the pins and cleaned them as well as I could. They are pitted somewhat but clean. I intend to reassemble the brake assembly and retry. I would like to put a bit of some type of lubricant on the pins to see if this will help..... Any ideas about what type?

Has anyone experienced and fixed a similar problem?? Any ideas out there about what's happening??

Thanks,

JohnR

    John,
I am totally confused by your words. The "pin" that holds the rotor to the hub has nothing to do with anything. It's only function is to hold the rotor to the hub if the wheel is taken off.
There are 2 slide pins for the caliper which must be clean and coated with brake grease. They are covered in a rubber boot, of sorts.

Your "drumming" noise may be from the CV joint. Did you check the boot for tears or leaks? Did the noise change when applying the brakes with the right foot still on the throttle to maintain speed?

      Thanks for the response Klaus.

The noise is coming from a rear caliper, the CV joints are OK I believe. The noise stops when the brakes are applied (with my left foot) moderately hard and with my right foot on the throttle to maintain speed.

The pins I referred to are the disk holding pins and I thought that the rust on them might be binding the disks and causing the vibration. I will put some brake grease on them tonight and see if this helps.

I had a simalar noise on my front disc after a few miles. What was happening was the caliper was siezed and heating the disc up. This caused it to expand and then start to resonate at speed. If your discs are rusty as you said,it sounds like the pads aren't even touching them though. Are the discs warm or hot after a short journey?

Thanks for the reply. The disk is hot and shiny on both sides so I know some portion of the pads is touching the disk (but I can't be 100% certain for the inside pads). I was wondering, though, if the pads were only touching a portion of the disk and that this was what was causing the noise. My pad retaining pins were quite rusty and I cleaned them up as well as possible, but the noise is still there though it appears to be not as frequent as before. I will buy some brake grease tonight and see if this helps.

If the rotor is hotter then the other rear rotor, you have a stuck piston.

Take out the pads on the problem rotor and use channel pliers to try to push the piston back in. It takes about 30lbs of pressure to slowly squeeze the piston. If it wont move, you will need a new caliper.

BTW, the pins that hold the spring for the pads do get rusty but will not have any bearing on the noise pads make. They are a non moving part. New pins and a spring are very cheap to buy and replace.
The 10mm rotor holding pin gets rusty and also has no function except to hold the disk inplace. The lugnuts hold the rotor to the axle.

Thanks for the info and advice; it helped me a lot.

Yesterday, I bought new pins and spring for holding the disks and applied brake grease to them. This seems to have cured the problem, I have driven the car about 50km (30 miles) with no noise. No disk was obviously hotter than the other at the rear, so I assume that there is no stuck piston in the caliper. Given the condition of the spring and pins that I replaced, I will do the other side soon. We use a lot of salt on the road in the winter and this really shows me that I need to be a bit more proactive on preventative maintenance.
