XC70 or XC 90...sorry TYPO for prior message V70-XC70

I never go off road, so I do not need the ground clearance of the XC90. I prefer the awd wagon.
The early awd versions, mine is one, requires all tires to be the same size. So when I had a nail through the side wall last year, I had to buy 4 new tires. The other tires had about 20K miles on them. Yep, I was pissed.

Your question about Volvo only shocks surprises me. Mine has self leveling Nivomats in the rear ($400 each) but other normal junky things up front. No shocks say Volvo on them, and getting Koni or Bilstein for replacement is not a problem, except for Nivimats! I have over 140K miles on my shocks, not bad.

Slightly different size tires are no longer an issue? .... V70-XC70

You wrote, "...The early awd versions, mine is one, requires all tires to be the same size....".

With particular attention to the word "early" in that sentence, does that mean that it's no longer as critical an issue? Have they changed the system's design? (Or maybe just the change to a different fluid, and/or the slightly less amount in the housing?)

I'm wondering if I made a mistake telling my daughter to get a FWD instead of a AWD when she bought a new 2007 model last fall. And we also may buy a new car, too (just paid off our 30-yr mortgage). So your take on the matter would be appreciated.

      Thanks.

If I were to buy another Volvo, the fwd would be just fine. Having only 2-3 weeks each year to justify it, awd robs too much power and can be a maint nightmare.
The 1997-2001(?) models have a mechanical system which is prone to failure. The newer models have a much better system, still complex. The tiresize issue is better, you can now use the spare tire without destroying the bevel gears in 20 miles.
Your daughter will be just fine with the fwd, especially with the higher gasoline prices :)
My daughter wants a Mini :) and I said OK, so long as she graduates with a 3.75 or higher.
