850R Volans wheels question--durability? 850

Hi--I'm probably buying a 1997 850R this week. It's in GREAT shape, red, with 17 in Volans wheels. I've been reading a lot about the Volans wheels on the forums, and am wondering how fragile they really are. Seems like there is a constant thread of warnings about these wheels bending. How serious is this concern? I would prefer to keep the Volans on the car.
I guess I'll find out soon enough, but some more info on this topic would be a big help as I ponder what the car may need to be safe and sound in the future.
Thanks for your help.............Tifosi

    850R Volans wheels question--durability? 850

I've read a lot too about their breakability. I have 15in on my 850 with Bilsteins, and I shudder when I hit some holes, but i have never broken a 15in rim or even damaged a tire. And I live in Michigan, home of the worst roads this side of Jupiter.

If I were you I would get a set of rims and tires online and save the Volans for shows. Probably 16in wheels would give you almost the same performance and less worries.

      850R Volans wheels question--durability? 850

A lot of the problems with the Volans was due to the tires, 205/45 Pirelli's with low load rating and short side walls. I have just upgraded to 17" Titans on my 96 R and I am using 215/45 Yokohama Avids. they have a 91 load rating and about 3.8" of sidewall. A little stiffer than the 16" Columbas' had but not bad, I like a fair amount of road feedback. I now have a set of Columbas with fair Avids, 205/55/16, that I am going to sell...if you are in the So Cal area.
