windshield spontaneously cracked S80 2005

It was hot out, maybe 105F, the A/C running, the car stopped at corner. Accelerate (gently) to proceed and the windshield cracks above driver's eye level across to center (about 24"). There were no other vehicles in the area to throw off any rocks, no known existing rock chip to initiate a crack. So any ideas what happened?

More importantly, will Volvo honor a warranty claim on a windshield?

thanks

Just back from dealer, luckily only 8 miles from home.

They must have better lighting than I have. Within 2 seconds of my arrival the service manager pointed out the impact location: very top edge in the center. Looks like a speck of dust. The crack goes from down several inches from there before taking a sharp turn to the driver's side and becoming visible in the clear glass. Hard to see in the black tinted portion but if you get the right angle on it, there it is.

So this is not a warranty claim, and I have a $1000 deductible. *sigh*

Are you sure the $1000 deductible applies to glass too? I pay an extra eight bones a year for glass covereage on our Mini. It's either no deductible or something like $50, I can't remember. It may or may not be built into your policy though...

There are times when I wish my 850's windshield would develop a big crack. Like when I'm on the highway in traffic heading into the sun and the glass lights up like a christmas tree from 12 years of chips and sandblasting.

Ditto on the bad glass or poor mounting. I'm not familiar enough with the S80 to know if it's a common issue.

It IS a common issue with certain ('05 and '06 I believe) Mini Cooper/Cooper S's - especially in cold weather. From what I've read, it's a design or process issue. People have had mixed results with getting Mini/BMW dealers to cover it. They'll inspect it to make extra special sure that there's no chips in the glass that could have initiated the crack.

Stick to your guns and don't take no for an answer!

    Good luck.

thanks for the reinforcement. I've looked at it closely, run my fingers over it and can not find an impact point that may have triggered this.

I called the dealer today and they said "bring it in and we'll find the impact point and show it to you". He would not allow the possibility this happened due to defect. I'll bring it in tomorrow and stay with it at all times until they show me the impact point.

It's either a faulty windshield or improper mounting. I'd try Volvo for warranty but if your deductible is low I wouldn't force the issue.

      John,
It is not a question of money at this point, but a question of what caused the problem. If it was a defect or install error, then the factory must be made aware of the problem, and what better way than to have the dealer make a claim against the factory?
If we have the insurance company cover it, and another poor soul has this happen to them, we are all at fault for covering up a mistake. It is best to determine the cause of any problem and if it is because of design or installation, a complaint will be better than cest la vie.

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

A new, aftermarket windshield can be installed for $200-300. Notify Volvo and try to get it covered but because of the relatively small amount involved I wouldn't waste lots of time.
