Exhaust Smell etc etc 850 1996

When I first start up my car in the morning I smell a very intense exhaust stench. It seems to be coming from underneath the car versus out the tailpipe. After the car warms up, roughly 2 minutes or more, the smell disappears. Do I have an exhaust leak or is it something else? Also, what are the symptoms of a fuel filter replacement...I have 99K and I'm guessing it hasn't been done on the maint. schedule yet as it says replace at 100K. I have only owned this 1996 850GLT for a couple months. Oh, how much do rear upper shock mounts typically cost to repair..ballpark estimate? thanks again:-)
