1999 S70 - Good Car? or Should I Avoid? S70

Greetings, I posted this on the All models forum also hoping to hear from those that have other model Volvo's as well (hope that's not in bad form). A good friend of mine told me his mother might be looking to sell her 1999 S70 Volvo. It's apparently cherry clean with about 60K. I haven't seen it yet (nor have I taken particular notice of any S70s). Only thing he knew of was a small dent in the back and that the cloth covering on the inside front windshield pillars was starting to come off. He's not sure if it's a turbo or not or if it's 2 or AWD (he lives away from her, she's in her 70s). He thinks she wants about 3500-4000 for it.
Anyway, I just wanted to hear some experienced opinions about this model/year and any particular pitfalls, weaknesses, quirks, notorious problems, periodic mechanical service "musts", and good points as well. I don't particularly care for front wheel drive as it makes getting to some areas of the motor, steering and suspension more complicated, CV boots are a PIA, and photos I've just seen of the engine well show virtually no room to even stick a hand in. Is the timing belt hard to access on the sidemount 5 Cyl's? Thanks for any input!

1999s have a 105,000 mile timing belt change interval BUT the tensioner is a mechanical one, requires a special tool, and MUST be changed with the belt.

The '94-'98 cars have a hydraulic tensioner and a 70,000 mile belt interval. The belt is the same PN, the difference is just the tensioner.

Yes, yes, it is an interference motor!

The inside cover of the "A" pillars is a piece of plastic, not cloth -- maybe it's loose it's a "snap fit" -- even if it 's broken it's only a few bucks from the dealer.

    Avoid the AWDs!!!!!

The '99s are also drive-by-wire and have electonic throttles with problems which Volvo extended the warranty to 200,000 miles/10 years.

Besides the ETM issue there are the usual Volvo AC issues, suspension issues, brake issues, etc. etc. Still, sub 100,000 mile Volvos for $4000 or less are getting rarer and rarer. As long is it's been reasonably maintained -- oil changes-- it might be worth looking at.

1999 S70 - Good Car? or Should I Avoid? - lots of notes, see archives S70

This is a common question, and you can see many opinions in the archives. In my opinion:

    1. If the condition is really clean, consider it. If neglected, NO.
    2. If 2-wheel drive, YES. If AWD, it's a high-cost car unless you absolutely have to have AWD for skiing trips or something like that. In that case, a Subaru would be a better choice.
    3. At his age, if you buy it, you better plan on comprehensive maintenance such as having all the fluids changed. Definitely change the transmission fluid, regardless of the BS you might hear about lifetime oil.
    4. Maintenance: it's a bit tight in the engine compartment but not as bad as many recent cars I have seen.
    5. The 5-cyl engine is a robust design.

My wife's 1999 V70 has been very dependable, and the only trouble we have is the delaminating door panels. Volvo NA has been stinky about that issue, as they were about the ETM failures. Very poor from a company that advertises the safety and durability of their cars. Our car has the 5-sp. manual transmission, so no trans. problems. Good luck.

Thanks for the reply BG, I have looked through some of the archives here, but it's pretty tedious, particularly on a dial up connection! One thing I learned was that when the timing belt is replaced (recommended at 70K) the tensioner/pulley should also be replaced. I looked up the parts and there are apparently two versions, mechanical and automatic (hydraulic) tensioning. Not sure which is the one that has the weak pulley. A recent post states that the pulley failed and ruined the motor, so I presume the 5 cyl is an interference type motor? These are types of things I'm looking to find out as well as other maintenance and performance antecdotes.
