I had this happen to me.
It cost us $5k for a new engine.
The dealer replaced the timing belt but not the tensioner.

    Hello,

How many miles on the car? Belt ever been changed? Volvo recommends that the belt and tensioner be replaced together (assuming that you have the mechanical tensioner pulley, being that they are the ones that have had trouble). Volvo is not likely to help in any way, considering that the pulley should have been replaced with the belt (again, assuming that the belt has been replaced by now, being a 1998 model). Many people replace the belt alone, leading to failure of the pulley lated on down the road. 1998 was an especially troublesome year for the pulley, as it was the first year for the new style. However, I have never seen one fail BEFORE it was due to be replaced, only if they have been neglected. Anyway, let me know what I can help with.

Do you mean the tensioner pulley? Or one of the others. Do you know if you have the hydraulic tensioner or the new manual one. The new style tensioner has been known to break before 105K miles, usually between 80-95K, in the 1998 and 1999 years.
With the old style hydraulic tensioners, it is reccomended to be replaced at 70K miles, along with its pulley.

BTW, please do not use all caps. It is akin to YELLING on line, and people will ignore those who yell.

Please answer, we need to know if the advice is good or bad. The 164 has a new home, all I am left with are 2 turbos :)

I have a 99 S70GLT with 70k miles, what damage will occur if the tensioner breaks?

If the tensioner fails, the belt will slip and your valves will hit the pistons. A few thousand dollars will make it all right again.

I had a timing gear crack on my 164E at age 15 years and over 180K miles. That model did not have an interference engine. It was a fiber gear.

I'm sorry for your trouble - how many miles are on your car? Their "good will" offering if any would depend on that, probably.
