White smoke 850 1994

Hi

I've got a smoking dipstick on my wagon and also white smoke from the exhaust when I accelerate after a downhill, then it stops. My car is a 855 T5 and being a turbo doesn't have a PCV valve to clean, correct? I also have high oil consuption, around 1L every 2000 Km, but having 300000Km plus on the engine doesn't help.
Apart from this and of front warped rotors this nice machine runs like hell!
Anything i can do (clean, check or change) to improve the oil consumption and the smoke?

Regards to you all

Rui

Your oil separator box, under the intake manifold, is probably clogged and/or the hoses to the turbo area are also clogged. These need to be replaced as soon as possible to prevent further damage. If you check this site, there is a drawing of what you will need:

If your brakes are warped, have the rotors machined smooth, get new pads, and break them in properly. Always check the torque values of the lug nuts.

Hi Klaus

Thanks for your advice on this issue. I don't remember this system ever being checked, will do it now. The oil separator is supposed to be changed, not cleaned, right? Would this malfunction promote high oil consumption or only the white smoke?

About the warped rotors, i recall that was after a tire change, very frequent on this machine, that i started to feel a strange shudder on the steering, when brakes were applied at about 100/120 Km/h.

Many thanks for this valuable information.

Best regards

Replacing the oil breather system will reduce pressure in the engine, helping to lessen oil consumption. When you let off the gas while going downhill, there is a lot of vacuum pressure in the intake manifold and changing the breather hoses will help.
I suggest you buy a torque wrench, so that after tire changes you can set the tightness of the lug nuts to 82 lbs. That will help eliminate shudder. Once the brakes start doing that, the rotors need to be cleaned and smoothed by machine to get rid of it.
Do check your coolant level, use a marker and make a mark at the cold temp level and check it weekly. We do not want the white smoke to be a headgasket leak, or a leak in the radiator.

Hi

Sorry for my late response

I fully understand what you told me, about the breather system. I'm still gathering info on how to access and replace the parts.

The tire store i use now, only uses the air gur to undo the bolts on the wheels and they use a dyno wrench to tighten them up, although I really don't know the torque they apply, will have to check it. The harm has been done.

About the coolant level, it has been fine for the last three years. There was a time when the expansion tank broke, the top radiator hose bursted and then the side box on the radiator developed a leak, all this in six months. New parts solved the problem
