New t5 brick questions tire size, Peformance upgrades? V70-XC70

New Brick! Its an 01 V70 T5 5 speed with cloth. It needs skins,I'm thinking of 245 45 17s as they seem more plentiful. Has anyone monkeyed with tire sizes on theirs? What can be done to increase performance? Is anyone aware of where a parts car may be,I'm in Georgia and would like to find leather seats...

    It's not just size .... V70-XC70

Just thought I'd suggest to you not to think that all tires of the same size are the same. Going to a larger (wider or whatever) size isn't necessarily going to give you more traction -- sometimes you can achieve more grip by staying with the original size and going to a higher-performance tire, instead of a K-Mart "special".

Of course, size does matter, too. For example, on my 240s (original size, 185/70-14), I use Michelin Pilot Exalto PE2's in 205/55-16 (speed rating, W) on Hydra wheels; my wife's car has the same tires in 205/55-15 on Virgo's. I picked them by studying magazine tire tests, as well as Tire Rack's tests. There are other good tires, as well. Just don't buy a fat but no-name tire because it's cheap and think you've enhanced your performance.

Anyway, just keep in mind that size isn't everything -- there are large sticky tires, and there are large slippier tires, too. You get what you pay for.

    Good luck.

Thanks for the reply. My size question was worded poorly. I was assuming the same exact tire (z rated or better)of good quality. And I love Michelins too. My desire for a slightly larger tire is purely asthetic. I just thought it might look cool. The T5 and I enjoyed a spirited ride through the twisties near my home this evening and now I'm not sure that I want to monkey with anything that works that well. Fun!

You should see/try it first. IMO you should not consider 245 since most of 235/45/17 rub the wheelwell on V70 T5'01 (not the stock Pirelli's though) - 245 will make it worse. I'd say you should concentrate on reliability areas rather that performance upgrades ;-) - it's a 7yr old car that you're buying.

We will definitely go through the car mechanically. It drives amazingly well.quiet, very tight, smooth. It did not seem to like to get into the boost at first but after some fresh premium is much happier. The Tire rack says that BFG KDWs @ 235 45 are 9.3 wide and 24.4 diameter.245 45 are 9.6 and 24.7 diameter. not a huge difference but I definitely don't want rubbing...

Your going from 235/45-17 to 245 should be alright. That's only 1/2 inch wider.

Cloth seats are hard to find and are preferable in hot and cold climates. There should be a few folks who would love to trade. Unfortunately, I am not coming anywhere close to GA this year. You might want to specify color.

Thanks for the response! The new ride is platinum green with graphite cloth. I haven't decided if graphite is black or gray or both. Would a Z rated tire be important to the handling of the car? The scary thing is that I have not yet seen the car in person. It was on Ebay, the seller swears that it has a clean Carfax,no paint work, non smoker and needs only tires. We'll see soon. Can't wait to have another Turbo wagon.

Not wanting to sound bad, but buying a car sight unseen is a little risky. Let's hope you get lucky and the car is as it seems.
Unless you live in a neighborhood without speed limits, why would you ever need Z rated tires? Even in the western states, the max limit is 80 (Texas).

Yes, Ebay/online buys are an absolute roll of the dice. Homework helps.I got the Carfax and asked the important questions twice.Looked carefully at pics... The car arrived on a trailer this morning. The seller must have missed that the ac clutch was sticking(oops!) but otherwise called it pretty close. If it stays about the way it is today it was a terrific value. It actually drives incredibly well and after a round of trim cleaning and some black again it looks great.
