240 Airconditioning

This 1993 240s been working great - but this summer the Air Conditioner stopped working.

the service station says it's full of "freon", but the compressor doesn't get power - and when they add power, the compressor still doesn't work.

New compressor was gonna be about $650 plus installation and troubleshooting electric -

any ideas - reconditioned compressor available somewhere? - I'm in Westchester County NY.

any help appreciated - We are now trying to sell her, but without airconditioning in the summer, it's been tough.

Thanks to all, in advance.

If the compressor is not getting 12 volts, then it is either a fuse or the switch. Buying a new compressor will not restore power. It is time to check the wiring.

The services station said the compressor was not getting voltage - AND when voltage was applied - the compressor still didn't work - hmmm - maybe they are wrong???

Sorry, but I have had it with black cars :)

The electricity is there to get the clutch to engage. So even with 12V applied, the electromagnet would not pull the clutch down? Have you checked the gap in the clutch? It should be less than .030 inch, more than .040 may be too far away to pull the clutch.
Turn the car on, AC on. With a stout stick, tap the center of the clutch and see if it engages. If it does, you need to take the clutch off and move the spacers to decrease the gap.
Also check the switch in the dash to make sure it is working.

I doubt that you need a new compressor. A different shop prehaps.
